Winfield Elementary School Improvement Goals
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in reading.
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in mathematics.
From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
Next week we celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week was established to honor Enrique Camarana, a drug enforcement officer who gave his life in the fight against drugs. He was kidnapped and killed in the line of duty. The Red Ribbon became the symbol to reduce the use of illegal drugs and violence. At Winfield, we will celebrate the choice of living a healthy life free of drugs and violence with educational stories and videos. We will also host a Coloring Contest with the top prize of a bicycle, donated by The Clayton Family!
Tuesday- CRAZY SOCK DAY! Wear your craziest socks!
Wednesday- WEAR RED DAY! Wear your Red Ribbon Tee or Red!
Thursday- TEAM UP AGAINST DRUGS! Wear your favorite jersey or team shirt!
Friday- PAJAMA DAY! Wear your favorite school-appropriate pajamas!
*Please note: though we aim coordinate, due to previously scheduled events at each school, theme days may vary between Winfield and Jerry Ross.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher relationships are most effective when participants have frequent and open communication with each other and demonstrate mutual respect for each other’s role in a child’s life. When families are positively involved in their child’s education, the child will flourish. Winfield Teachers will conduct Parent-Teacher Conferences on Monday, October 30th and Tuesday, October 31st and additional select times through November 10th.
In order to accomplish meeting with all parents, these two days of school will be half-days with a 12:14 dismissal time. Please mark your calendars! We aim to conference with 100% of our families.

Halloween Celebrations at School on October 31st
Please look for specific information from your child's teacher regarding their plans for a classroom Halloween celebration. Here are some important general guidelines for school:
COSTUMES
- Costumes are optional; however, most students elect to bring a costume.
- Students’ school costumes MUST NOT INCLUDE blood and guts, weapons, inappropriate messages, or skimpy/revealing attire.
- Weapons, even pretend weapons, are not allowed at school. Students will be required to change or modify their costume if they make inappropriate choices.
- All costumes should be age appropriate. All children in our school are between 5-8 years old.
- No scary movie characters (i.e. Chucky, Ghostface, Michael Meyers) are permitted.
PARTIES
- You must have a background check on file if volunteering.
- Only parents signed up for the party may attend due to space constraints.
- Volunteers will help children in/out of costumes if needed.
LOST and Found is overflowing!
From the Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Sims
Recognize ∙ Report ∙ Refuse
Now that our students know how to RECOGNIZE and REPORT bullying, we must teach them how to REFUSE it. We encourage our students to stand up for themselves by refusing to allow the bullying to continue. Using a strong, respectful voice our students should say, “Stop it; that’s bullying!” If the bullying continues, then our students must Report it again. Our next lesson we will talk with the students about what is expected of them if they observe someone else being bullied.
From the Home-School Facilitator, Mrs. Mucha
Self-esteem is our beliefs about our self; how capable and loved we feel. Helping our children develop a healthy self-esteem is very important. This is because self-esteem affects all areas of their lives. It affects how they learn, how they interact with friends, how they treat others, how they make decisions and problem solve, how they handle adversity, and how willing they are to take risks and try new things. Here are some important ways you can help your child develop healthy self-esteem:
1. Praise your child. Notice when your child has done something well. Be careful with criticism. A rule of thumb is they should hear five positives for every one negative thing you say.
2. Criticize the behavior. When your child misbehaves, talk about the behavior being bad, not the child.
3. Validate feelings. If your child gets a blow to their self-esteem, they need you to allow them to feel sad, hurt, or mad. After they have felt their feelings, then work to boost them up with positives.
4. Give your child chores. Children learn how to function in groups by learning how their own family works together. Set your child up to be a team player by giving age-appropriate chores at home.
5. Give the gift of time. Your children know how busy you are, so when you find ten minutes to play a game or listen to a story about their day, they will feel worthy and loved.
6. Avoid harmful comparisons. Do not compare your child to others, especially siblings. Try saying, “Did you notice how so-and-so does this?” instead of “Why can’t you be more like so-and-so?”
Let your child know it’s okay to be who they are and that you don’t expect perfection.
