OUSD Assistive Technology Update
December 2020
Message From Oceanside Assistive Technology Support Specialist, Lena Medina
Happy December! This year, our Assistive Technology Department has been busy with staff and parent trainings, completing Assistive Technology Request orders, and collaborating together to support you and your students.
My name is Lena Medina. I previously worked at Garrison Elementary as a Speech Language Pathologist. I have been with Oceanside for 7 years. I have always LOVED Assistive Technology, so this year I made the big change of moving to a support role as Assistive Technology Specialist. I have enjoyed working with many of you already this year and look forward to meeting more staff and assisting you with Assistive Technology for your students. There is so much information out there about Assistive Technology. I, too, am learning so much everyday.
This monthly newsletter is meant to be a resource to share information including live trainings, videos, tips, and success stories. I hope you take the time to look through it. My contact information is below. I would love to hear from you.
What is Assistive Technology?
Who Can Request Assistive Technology?
Most often, Assistive Technology consideration and request is made by a team of professionals (usually members of the IEP Team). This team may include the Program Coordinator, Education Specialists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Parent, and Student.
Since the reauthorization of IDEA, there has been a nationwide trend to identify and train staff within each school district to be more knowledgeable about assistive technology. We are moving away from an expert based approach on to a student-centered IEP team approach. It is no longer a one time event, rather an ongoing, continual process, which includes trials with potential assistive technology.
