Distance Learning for All

April 30, 2020

Big picture

As we wrap up our third week of Distance Learning, I want to take a moment to thank you for your engagement and support of your student's learning. I know the transition to learning from home has been challenging, yet I'm appreciative of how well our students, families, and staff are making the adjustment.

Last week, the Oregon Department of Education released new guidance around grading. ODE is directing districts to issue report cards with a Pass/Incomplete grade for the Distance Learning period. You can learn more about the grading guidance here. The Pass/Incomplete mark will not affect a student's cumulative GPA. Additionally, no student will be repeating a grade when we begin the 2020-21 school year.

We are looking ahead to next year. We have started planning for a return to our classrooms and developing plans in case we find ourselves suddenly engaging in Distance Learning again. As part of this planning process, we are working to determine how to provide devices for our K-5 students. We are hopeful that we will be able to move in this direction as we have seen how important technology is when we are away from our schools.

Tomorrow is National School Lunch Hero Day! It's a day to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make in the lives of every child who accesses school meals. When you see your nutrition services hero tomorrow, try giving an extra word of thanks for all they do. Throughout our state-mandated school closure, they have prepared and served nearly 40,000 meals for our students and children in our community!

Finally, please join me in recognizing our hard working teachers, specialists, and counselors as we celebrate Certified Appreciation Week next week. Never before have teachers had to rapidly adjust their teaching and support strategies in a matter of weeks. Our staff has risen to the challenge. We are truly grateful for these amazing educators and proud of the work they are doing to support all students in Canby!

Best,

On March 20, Canby School District published its "Parent Resources" website to provide Supplemental Educational and Learning Supports for all students. This site provides resources, vetted by our Teaching and Learning Department, in both English and Spanish.

In addition to enrichment opportunities in core subject areas like math, reading, science, and social studies, you will also find fun activities involving logic and coding, physical education, and social-emotional learning.

If you're looking to "go beyond" the assignments you're receiving through Distance Learning for All, this is a great resource to access extended learning opportunities. Click the image below to access the website.

BOND MEASURE 3-559

In February, the Canby School District Board of Directors unanimously voted to refer a $75 million bond to voters on May 19, 2020. The bond was filed before Oregon Governor Kate Brown ordered schools to close for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

Earlier in the year, a community-led committee determined the scope of the bond and made a recommendation to the Board. The Board then decided it would move forward with the bond.

You will see the bond on your mail-in ballot, which will begin arriving in homes in the coming days. Here are five things you need to know about Bond Measure 3-559:

  • The bond approved by voters in 2000 will expire in June 2020. If approved, this new measure is estimated to replace the tax rate of the expiring bond ($1.07 per $1,000 of assessed value) and would not increase the property tax rate over the 2019 rate.

  • The State of Oregon has awarded Canby a matching funds grant of $4.6 million to help fund Bond projects. The District only receives the grant if the bond measure passes.

  • If passed, the bond would improve health, safety, and security through improvements of heating, HVAC, and security features.

  • If passed, the bond would replace old, obsolete electronic student devices and improve school site technology/network connection points and terminals.

  • An independent citizen Bond Oversight Committee would monitor the progress of the bond, issue regular reports and ensure that projects are being managed responsibly.
