Superintendent’s Report

Transition to Hybrid Learning

The Clark County Health Department released the latest Covid-19 data for this week: 262.2 new cases per 100,000 population. This number indicates that Clark County continues to be in the “moderate” risk level for a second consecutive week. We reviewed the data in Monday’s board meeting and confirmed moderate level timelines for in-person learning experiences accordingly. The board will review COVID-19 level data again on 2/22.

Learning Delivery Model Definitions

Small Group - students grouped in cohorts of 15 or less (could be A/B model); shortened school day; remote learning still primary learning delivery model

Hybrid - students grouped in A/B cohorts for two full days of in-person instruction per week; remote learning delivery model for other three days; capacity determined by state physical distancing parameters

In-Person - students attend four full days of in-person instruction per week; remote learning delivery model on Wednesdays; capacity determined by state physical distancing parameters

Full-time, Remote Learning will continue to be an option for any student. This may require regrouping based on the number of students who need this option.

Camas Connect Academy

Career and Technical Education Director Derek Jaques and Associate Principal Tim Fox were on hand to give the board an update on our completely online program Camas Connect Academy (CCA). This program was launched this school year as an option for families who wanted full remote instruction and serves students in grades 3-12. He described the differences among delivery models at the elementary, middle, and high school levels as well as considerations for the future.

Inclement Weather

Today is our first inclement weather day of the year which will be made up on March 12. Should we have another snow day, it will be made up on May 28. These are built-in makeup days set in our district calendar. Any other future inclement weather days will be switched to remote learning only days.

Two-Hour Delay If we need to delay schools due to inclement weather, these are our current guidelines.

  • All learning will be delayed 2 hours whether a student is in-person or remote learning.
  • Middle school in-person small groups will be canceled and learning will be shifted to remote.
  • Elementary will continue in hybrid (K-5), 2 hours delayed.
  • JWR, ZAC, HLC childcare will open at 9:00 AM.
  • There will be no AM preschool.

Transportation Department Our transportation department goes above and beyond to serve our students and families. Throughout our reopening planning, staff in the transportation have been given multiple scenarios and "what ifs" to get our students to school for small-group, in-person learning. We want to give a shout out to Tami Allison, Kim Ritter, Shelly Patridge, Kelly Utehs, and the entire team of drivers who consistently figure out ways to see and serve our students. There isn’t a situation or scenario that we’ve given them and they haven’t made work. Kudos to an outstanding team!

Virtual Parent Workshop

The Birds & Bees for Parents of Middle Schoolers

What does your student need to know about the birds and the bees by the time they start middle school? Get prepared for what’s coming and learn this – and more – in this workshop like the #1 avoidable fact about teen sexuality and what typical middle schoolers are up to in the sexuality department. And, discover the key to getting kids to listen to you when you talk about these issues.

Seattle-based Amy Lang, MA, will facilitate this presentation. As a sexual health educator for more than 20 years, she helps parents of all beliefs talk with kids of any age about the birds and the bees – turning conversations they dread into a regular (and fun!) part of their family lives. She is a speaker and award-winning author of the award-winning book Birds + Bees + YOUR Kids – A Guide to Sharing Your Beliefs About Sexuality, Love, and Relationships and Dating Smarts: What Every Teen Needs to Know to Date, Relate or Wait.
