Principal Update
Looking at the calendar today I am a little shocked how quickly we worked through January! Our students and staff have been working hard on getting into a steady rhythm this second semester while we have so much to accomplish. Today you will notice your child/children's winter NWEA scores arriving in your inbox. Please remember if you have any questions, reach out to your teachers for assistance.
I would like congratulate our RSI Science Bowl team for earning 3rd place in the State Championship! Thank you to coach Becky Floetker and the Science Bowl Team for such positive energy, effort and accomplishments in this year's competition! Please see our 3rd place team below. Great job team, the RSI community is so proud of you!
Have a wonderful and safe weekend. Please look for Dr. Stokes Friday message as well.
Sincerely,
Dana Kaminski, Ph.D.
Riverside Intermediate Principal
Covid Info for Families
Please remember to send your student to school healthy. If a student is ill and has any of the symptoms of Covid listed below, we encourage you to get your student tested using a PCR test, which is available via Fishers Health Department (COVID Vaccine | Fishers, IN - Official Website) or the Indiana Department of Health (ISDH - Novel Coronavirus: COVID-19 Testing Information). PCR tests are the most accurate and provide less risk of a false positive or negative result. A visit to your physician is also suggested if you feel this is not Covid-related, then a doctor's note would be needed for your student to return to school. Please do not send your child to school ill or while waiting for Covid test results.

Attention 6th Grade Parents!
Junior High is just around the corner, and we are starting the scheduling process. In early February next year’s 7th grade counselor from Riverside Junior High will be meeting with all current 6th grade students to make elective choices for 7th grade. She will walk them through what classes 7th graders take and answer questions that they may have. Below is the link to the video for parents about 7th grade course offerings. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Mott (next year’s 7th grade counselor) at amott@hse.k12.in.us.
Maker Playground 5th Grade Project Leader
Would you like an ongoing volunteer opportunity that will foster relationships and connect with the youth of Hamilton Southeastern Schools? We are seeking dedicated volunteers who are available to assist with the 5th grade program at the Maker Playground Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Due to the nature of this opportunity, we are asking volunteers to commit to at least one day a week through May 13. Tours will not occur during school breaks.
Please do not respond to this opportunity if you are not able to volunteer once a week.
Volunteers will assist with the following activities:
- Woodworking: Students will work in Project Alley to build a nest box (birdhouse) using precut lumber. Students will learn about competition for habitat, measure perimeter and area, and learn basic tool usage.
- Robotics: Students will be able to build a VEX robot and program it to complete a task. Dobot Robotic arms will be used to teach students about artificial intelligence and can be programmed to write text, pick up and sort objects.
- Circuitry: Students will have the opportunity to problem solve the creation of a light for their locker in this experience. Construction paper, copper tape, LED diode and coin batteries will be provided. Students will learn about the basics of circuitry when they are challenged to create a switch for their locker light using materials provided.
In collaboration with Hamilton Southeastern Schools, the Maker Playground is offering an experiential and project-based curriculum for all 5th grade students.
Modeled after the successful and popular Nature First program at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve, the program features study trips to the Maker Playground, where students are immersed in the workshop and work collaboratively to solve real-world problems through making.
The goal is to bridge the gap between education and industry, where students can begin thinking about how making is part of building their future career.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
Response to Instruction (RtI) is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.
