OHS Alumni, Major Willis, Jr., was featured in the publication, Spina Bifida of Louisiana. Here is his story.
Empowering children, adults and families
October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month
My name is Major R. Willis, Jr. and I was born with Spina Bifida-L4. I have a VP Shunt right placement. I have AFO Braces I wear to help me be more stable. Since birth as my mother tells me I have always been a fighter and person who loves taking on challenges so that I could pass the test and be an overcomer. I am very outgoing, I love meeting new people and engaging in conversations with others to always share my story.
I consider myself a strong, distinguished, intelligent young African American Male; who has had several bumps and bruises on this journey called life. But I never let that got the best of me. I always push myself to be the best at whatever I'm approached within life. So far, so good!
During my years in High School, I was always nominated to attend several programs in Washington, D.C. First, I attended the People To People Ambassador Program. Secondly, I attended The Law & CSI Forum for a week in Washington D.C. / Virginia. This trip was most beneficial to me because I want to study Criminal Justice to become a Forensic Psychologist.
During my senior year in high school; I was awarded several scholarships. I graduated with 27 College Credits with a high GPA 3.7. I was inducted into the Elite Club of Scholars by being the recipient of over 40 participants to be chosen for a Full Ride Scholarship to the University of Louisiana of Lafayette. I was awarded the Glen Armentor Scholarship of a very prestige Lawyer in Lafayette. I was given the Community Service Award Scholarship of 2019. I was given the Christiana Smith Scholarship of ULL. Just to name a few of many. I made a 21 on my ACT.
I just turned 18 years old in August. I am a college freshman at ULL, but I will soon be a sophomore after this semester ends with graduating from high school with 27 college credits. With that being said; I truly love school and I feel I am BLESSED to be able to have accomplished all of these things thus far. Also, I was given an apartment to live in all by myself. God is Faithful and Good All the Time!
I love spending time with my family, friends and going to gatherings. My dearest friend and biggest advocate is my mom; Tressha Wilis. She pushes me to believe in myself even sat times when I think things are not going well at times. I am an active member of my church in Bible study, choir, the youth ministry at Bellevue Baptiste Church in Opelousas, La. under the leadership of Rev. Joel Greene Jr.
If I had to say anything to another Spina Bifida Patient. I guess I would say never give up on life because you will never find out what life had to offer you! Always have faith and trust God with everything that you do; Because After all, he is the one who created you the just the way you are. God never makes a mistake! Amen.
