NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
March 12, 2020
From Principal Reckert
Good morning Nederland Elementary Families,
I think this is the fifth time I’ve revised this letter in the last 48 hours. I can’t believe how quickly things have changed in our community and world this week. Our current situation is unprecedented and certainly unnerving. However, I have a lot of confidence in our district leadership and their decision last night. All week they have been in constant contact with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and their decision to close all BVSD schools through spring break was one to prevent the spreading of the coronavirus and protect our most vulnerable community members.
The office is open today if you need to pick up medications or personal items. Please call or email ahead of coming so we know to expect you.
We are working to reschedule special events and field trips that were slated for the upcoming weeks. I will be in contact after spring break about new dates.
Teachers will be sending emails today about what students can work on at home for the next two weeks. Reading every day is the most important thing our students can do. You can read with your child, ask your child to read to the family pet, swing by the library to pick up some books or read together as a family.
Please remember, calm adults, equal calm kids. If children see your worry and fear around the coronavirus they will reflect that worry as well. The BVSD website is being updated daily and has great resources about the virus and how to talk to kids about it. Please take care of yourselves and stay healthy. I look forward to seeing you after spring break.
Warm Regards,
Laurel

Conflicts naturally occur in human interactions. We disagree. We have different needs and values. We misunderstand each other. It is a gift to know how to collaboratively work through arguments and repair broken relationships. Students practice strong people skills all year long (emotion regulation, assertive communication, reflective listening, accountability, brainstorming, genuine apologies) so that they can maneuver through the difficult steps of resolving their conflicts. As the world battles to contain the Corona Virus, parents have a special role to play. Here's a game plan for addressing your child's fears and enduring a possible extended Staycation in your home. Read more at: Surviving Spring Break and the Corona Virus

PTA News
Hello NES families,
It has been a week filled with uncertainty regarding community activities. To all our families that own local businesses and those families that work for local businesses, we know that the cancellation of FDGD is only adding to the economic headwinds that you have been facing from the canyon closures. We know the mountain you are staring up at right now may seem insurmountable, but we will pull through this as a community. A reminder to everyone, these are stressful times. Be kind. Reach out for whatever help you may need.
As you may know, the NES PTA board has been in flux with the resignation of Jessica Fitzer from the president position in November of 2019. Principal Reckert stepped in to fill the void and provide support for a few months while we searched for a parent volunteer. Sara Sandstrom-Kobi stepped up, and the NES PTA board voted in approval for Sara to become NES PTA president during the March 2020 meeting. Welcome, Sara!
Even with the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, the NES PTA is still planning on hold our year-end celebration (carnival, silent auction, spaghetti dinner) on May 8, 2020, from 5 - 7 pm. This date is 2 months off, and we are truly hoping that the worst of COVID-19 will be behind us so we can come together and celebrate - our amazing students, our hard-working NES teachers and staff, and our wonderful mountain community. It will be lovely if we can gather again and give our 5th graders a proper send off to middle school.
Keep practicing good hygiene.
Wishing you all good health.
