Winfield Elementary School Improvement Goals
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in reading.
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in mathematics.
All students will demonstrate growth in their social-emotional learning.
From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
Dear Winfield Friends and Family,
As we move through our GREEN status, you may have noticed that the number of individuals impacted by COVID-19 within the corporation has increased this week. The impact data dashboard is updated daily at 4 pm here: Dashboard. While we continue to show zero cases at Winfield Elementary on the dashboard, I would like to clarify and confirm what the dashboard reports.
A positive case is a confirmed case of COVID-19 within a Crown Point School. These numbers do NOT include students who are 100% distance learning.
According to the Indiana Department of Health, quarantined individuals are determined via contact tracing to have been within 6 feet of a positive case for a cumulative 15 minutes, with or without a mask.
Numbers of quarantined students include only those required to quarantine because of an identified exposure at a Crown Point school. It does not include quarantined staff or students who may be at home due to an exposure outside of school.
We have had students and staff who've needed to quarantine, but it has been due to an outside exposure, and would not be reported on the dashboard.
In other news, our students participated in a mock election and listened to the stories Duck for President and Otto for President. By a very small margin (193-189) Duck for President prevailed!
Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!

Textbook Rental Reminder
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Williams
In last week’s newsletter, I shared the importance of having an established morning routine to help offset the stress of getting everyone out the door on time. An equally challenging time in many of our homes is bedtime. As soon as the words “it’s bedtime” leaves our mouths, many of us are confronted with groans and moans.
This week, I want to share ways to make bedtime interactive and memorable when closing out the day. The interactions and valuable time we get in the evening with our kiddos is prime time for strengthening our connection with them, and aides in getting quality sleep. Quality sleep is a critical necessity for adults and children alike, and is often associated with positive daytime behaviors and demeanor.
Ideas to implement a healthy bedtime routine and get the family fully engaged: Ending the day on a positive note!
1. Parents and children swap picking each other’s pajamas for the night!
2. Have a teeth brushing jam session where the whole family brushes teeth together, complete with playing a family favorite song!
3. Share 5 favorite things about your child with them.
4. Play “Simon Says” throughout the bedtime routine.
5. Journal together about the day.
6. Share the “roses” and “thorns” of the day.
7. Read a bedtime story.
8. List every feeling experienced from the day.
9. Take turns sharing what you were grateful for from the day.
10. Draw pictures or write messages on each other’s back and try guessing what it was!
11. Predict what your dreams will be about.
12. Say goodnight with a special saying or handshake!

Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Adams
Hello, Winfield families -
We are in social-emotional learning mode in PBIS land! This week, we began our regular Second Step lessons by learning about the role that effective listening plays in learning. Listening is a fundamental skill for learning that helps children focus and pay attention. Learning and following the listening rules helps children listen to their teacher and improve their ability to listen and pay attention during class discussions.
Many children struggle to be successful in the structured learning environments of K-2, especially children still working to develop competence in the basic skills of paying attention, following directions, and inhibiting inappropriate behavior. Research shows that children who start school lacking these skills have poorer academic achievement and more problems with peers, so having these lesson available should prove quite beneficial.
In this first Second Step lesson, your child learned the rules for how to be a good listener. These rules help your child know how to listen and act in a group so everyone can learn.
These rules include both words and actions, and are as follows:
- Eyes watching (point to the corners of your eyes)
- Ears listening (cup your ears with your hands)
- Voice quiet (put your finger to your lips
- Body still (hug your torso with both arms)
If you would like to enforce this concept and these listening rules at home, try this activity:
- Before giving directions for daily activities, such as getting ready for school, setting the table, or getting ready for bed, remind your child to use the listening rules. For example - You need to use your listening rules now. Do the actions for each rule along with your child, and then give the desired directions: Please put a placemat and a knife and fork on the table for each person.
In the coming weeks, I will introduce skills related to focusing attention, following directions, and using self-talk in order to succeed in the classroom. I look forward to getting to know your child more through these lessons and helping them develop various learning skills!
Stay well,
Mrs. Adams

Face Mask Guidance
- Students must bring/wear their mask daily. If a mask is lost, damaged, or forgotten- as disposable one will be provided for them.
- When worn, masks must fully cover the nose and mouth.
- Masks may be colorful, have characters, and express children's individuality. Find ones that your child feels comfortable with and interested in wearing.
- Shields are only permitted if used as an additional layer of protection over a mask.
- Student masks should be labeled inside with the child's name.
- Students will be provided with a breakaway lanyard to attach their mask to. The lanyard must come to school daily.
- Masks must be laundered after use. Consider sending an extra mask to keep in your child's desk/locker.
Refusal to Wear a Face Covering
Students who refuse to wear a face covering will be reminded of the expectation and will be asked to comply with the request. Failure to do so will result in progressive steps as outlined in the student handbook, possibly resulting in moving the student to the remote learning model. Students and families who are unwilling to wear a face covering should opt into the remote learning model.

Understanding the Lunch Line: A Parent's Guide
The U.S. Department of Agriculture extended all Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and Seamless Summer Option (SSO) waivers through the end of the 2020/2021 school year. The move allows schools to offer meals to all children at no charge to minimize the challenges of meal service during a pandemic.
This waiver only allows breakfast and lunch free to all students. If families are in need of textbook assistance they will still need to complete a free and reduced benefit application which covers textbook assistance to approved families based on income.
This applies to meals (breakfast and lunch), not snacks and beverages.

Birthday Celebrations
As a school we believe it is important to recognize students on their birthdays. To protect instructional time in the classroom and manage student health needs, we do not allow edible birthday treats in the classroom (this includes CANDY in treat bags). Your child is invited to the office for a small birthday treat.
If you choose, non-food items may be substituted your child may commemorate their special day by bringing a small treat for their classmates (pencil, bookmark, sticker, etc.) or dedicating a book to the classroom (and placing a special birthday bookplate inside).
OPTIONAL: Families wishing to celebrate their child's birthdays at lunch may purchase Ice Cream Tickets for each child in the class. Tickets are $0.75 each. Please complete an order form in the office 1 week prior to birthday.
