``````NEW NEWS ``````
Elementary Student Devices Update - Ellen Willets
Pending Board of Education approval
Elementary principals and Technology Services met last week to review staff feedback regarding student devices, weighing the pros and cons of both iPads and MacBooks. Input from staff, assessment and classroom technology needs, desirable number of devices in buildings, and budgetary constraints were leading factors in the selection of iPads as the elementary student device. Elementary buildings will be supported with student iPads at a ratio of 4 iPads to 5 students. Media Center search stations and check-out station devices will be in addition to the building ratio for student iPads. Technology Services will begin preparing a lease for Board of Education approval of this purchase which puts the elementary devices on a 4 year refresh cycle.
No device will be removed from elementary buildings until after end of school. At that time all student MacBooks, Mac Minis and iPads (except iPad 5 refreshed last school year) will be removed from buildings. Technology Services anticipates the new iPads to be in buildings to start the 2019-2020 school year.
Technology Services is committed to a smooth transition. We are cognizant of our end-user and want to create a positive experience for staff and students. Following are steps that will be immediately implemented:
- Technology Services staff will be in buildings to better understand and address iPad concerns/issues shared and their curricular impacts.
- Technology Services will gather from all grade levels, Art, Music and P.E. apps needed for instruction to begin a process of establishing a core list of instructional apps. Lists will be finalized by Teaching and Learning and teachers.
- Elementary teachers will soon be receive a survey to gather input regarding professional development topics for supporting iPads in elementary classrooms. Technology Services and Teaching and Learning will design professional development sessions for Fall 2019.
Snow Day and Recording Reporting Day
Dr. Lewis and executive team members will discuss the missed elementary recording and reporting day next week. Conferences will proceed as planned next week without the availability of a recording/reporting day prior to visiting with families about student progress.
Reporting Scores on Progress Reports
The timeline for entering scores on report cards has been extended! The window will close Tuesday night at midnight. Teachers will receive warnings of the impending deadline two days in advance. Principals and administrative assistants will have instructions on how to reopen individual teacher accounts should the need arise. Let Emily and Amy know when your cards are ready to be printed and send them home on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Trimester 2 Grading Information (From Kirsten Wondra)
We wanted to remind you of a couple quick resources at your finger tips as you completing your Trimester 2 Progress Reports. This information is on the PS Unified Classroom Google+ Users group as well for your reference.
Complete instructions (from Trimester 1) on where and how to complete the progress reports for students:
Tutorial on how to view individual student T1 grades side by side with T2 grade column (this feature does not work for the whole class at a time)
Progress Reports will lock at midnight on February 19. You will see a warning bar at the top of your grading screen starting two days in advance of the lock.Comments on the Progress Report are limited to 250 characters.
PS Unified Classroom Updates
In the next several weeks, PowerSchool Unified Classroom will deploy an update. There are several known issues that will be resolved, several improvements to the product and two new features added. Please read through the attached release notes (below) to be aware of what will be changing with the release.
Parent Climate Survey
In recent years, we have disseminated our Parent and Staff surveys around P/T Conference time. I had the privilege of visiting with Bob Winkler on Thursday and he is aware that the surveys are one of our top priorities. I don’t believe the surveys will be ready to push out next week…but soon! Stay tuned…
Strategic Planning Meeting
Lawrence Public Schools is eager to establish a strategic plan to raise the bar of academic success for all students and eliminate opportunity gaps in order to make USD 497 the best school district in the country. We need your help.
The plan must be visionary, actionable, and coherent. It must be centered on a belief of high expectations for all students and developed with an equity lens. It must include aspects for supporting and sustaining the district’s resources including staff, funding, facilities, and community.
The Lawrence Board of Education approved contracting with Greenway Strategy Group for strategic planning services. The firm will support the design, development, and implementation of a process to determine strategic direction for the district, culminating in a five-year plan through 2023-2024.
Amanda Davis and I will be attending the design team meeting on Monday, February 18th.
School Redesign - From Kyleigh Edwards
I want to share some more resources with you about the Redesign Project. These were compiled with the help of Mena Hill and Sarabeth. I personally am very excited about the possibility of changing our schools for the better and really hope that you will consider this opportunity. The first survey sent out by Laurie is to find out how prepared our school is to take this step and a follow up vote will take place starting on March 6th. Please come talk to Sarabeth or me about this if you have more questions or are interested in a discussion about it.
District deadlines:
- The survey will be available to complete for all staff who are .5 to full time FTE from Feb. 12-19.
- Schools will be given the results of these surveys by February 28.
- Each certified staff member will then be given the opportunity to vote from March 6-20.
- Those schools who have at least 80% of their members indicating they approve joining in the process will then fill out an application form.
- On April 16, the Apollo schools will be announced.
Please come talk to Sarabeth or me about this if you have questions or are interested in a discussion about it. Also, please share this with any certified staff who I might have missed.
Thank you!
Kyleigh Edwards
Community Elementary Kindness Challenge
In celebration of National Kindness Week (February 11th-15th), Community Elementary students have created a video to challenge other schools to be kind. Community Elementary is asking other Kansas schools to join them in spreading kindness. If your school decides to accept the challenge, Community Elementary would love for you to share your video with them. Please email your video to the school counselor, Chelsey Martin, at martinch@cvilleschools.com.
