Amidst Difficult Time, Student Athlete Leadership Squad Debuts This Year
In March of 2020, the coronavirus came and halted sports in their tracks. Everyone knows the story from there. And even though sports still haven’t resumed, a new club started at BMHS; one that is determined to push through the pandemic and come out stronger on the other side. They are the Student Athlete Leadership Squad.
The Squad is composed of athletes from multiple sports that are coming together to discuss better ways to lead their fellow students and athletes. They’re also advocating for positive change in the athletic community.
Even though the Leadership Squad is a new club, they are already hard at work. During the meetings, they have been discussing various leadership scenarios, discovering who they are as individual athletes, and understanding who they are as a group so that they can be better leaders for others when sports get back to normal.
COVID-19 has definitely been unable to stop them; they have been meeting weekly through google meet. The members have been very determined to work extra hard, especially during times when their seasons have been cancelled and there is nothing else to do.
“This has been a great time for student leaders to step forward in all areas of involvement,” says Senior Kana Wong. “The Leadership Squad is a great example of kids taking on extra responsibility, with the hopes of improving the climate and the sports for the student-athletes at our school.”
As for options of meeting activities that still work at home, the group still has plenty of things they can improve.
“Leadership is an everyday process,” says Athletic Director and Leadership Squad Advisor Joel Beard. “It’s always about the process over the product; we can work on our process no matter what the circumstances are.”
One of the biggest parts of leadership is being able to stay positive and be a good leader on your team no matter what. During the pandemic it is very easy for people to let negativity and doubt into their minds, but Leadership Squad members have found ways to adapt.
“One thing I got out of living through COVID-19 is learning how to celebrate the small things. Before, when the world was functioning as it always did, I feel like a lot of people looked at the negatives and setbacks and didn’t focus on the good things that were happening right in front of them. Now, with COVID shutting things down, we are able to find even the smallest amounts of joy in our lives and celebrate it!” Senior Faith Sill said.
Junior Mariana Cardenas touched on another way that athletes can lead by keeping their spirits up and setting a good example for others. “One way I’ve been trying to stay positive right now as a student athlete is finding another outlet that brings me equal happiness as sports. One of those outlets is through exercising, it’s a good way to step away from the real world and to do something that pushes you physically,” she said.
As can be seen, the Student Athlete Leadership Squad is truly doing something remarkable. Keep an eye on them as they transform Beloit Athletics into an even stronger program!

Dear Purple Knight Families,
I want to share an important update with you today regarding winter sports:
We will continue to gather information and provide clarification on winter sports as information is made available to us. Your commitment and passion for our students and our programs are appreciated.
We have the privilege and associated responsibility to be great partners with our community. We work together to implement safety protocols that will aid in resuming the in-person programming we all miss. Our priority is to keep our students, staff, and community safe.
On October 19th, the Big 8 Conference collectively released a statement and announced that the Big 8 member schools have determined conference competition for winter sports will not occur this winter.
At this time, Beloit Memorial athletics will not hold any programming or winter athletics in person through January 24th, and we discourage students gathering or training together outside of school grounds through January 24th. We hope to return to education-based athletic programs as soon as it is safe to do so with guidance from our local public health department.
Our goal is to provide meaningful opportunities for students to interact with coaches while reducing the risk of transmission of COVID-19 to our stakeholders, in our facilities, and in our community.
If you have any specific questions about your student’s sports programs, please reach out to the head coach or me. You can find their contact information here.
Together we are #BeloitProud
