Week 10, Term 1, 2021
Dear parents and carers,
Term 1 has certainly flown by. We have had a fantastic start to 2021 and I thought I would give you a little update on a few of the initiatives that have taken place this Term.
Randwick City Council Log Art project
Earlier this month we were approached by Randwick Council and asked to design and paint some log seats for them as part of a state grant that they had been awarded. Using the theme of "Place," Aunty Vicky has been working with closely with students to create these beautiful Aboriginal themed designs, which include local plants and animals. The log seats will be displayed at La Perouse Museum in Term 2 and some of them will also remain in school for us to use.
Student Representative Council - (SRC)
Our first fundraiser of the year was held this term as we celebrated Harmony Day by coming into school wearing colours and clothes that represented our cultural identity. In total we raised almost $100 which will be used to purchase some new resources for lunch and recess times. Many thanks to everybody for bringing in their gold coin donation. Our next fundraiser will be a Pyjama day in Term 2. Watch this space for more information!
Australian Children's Music Foundation
This Term our school has been very fortunate to start Music lessons with Miss Bree from ACMF every Monday. Miss Bree has been teaching our students about deciphering notes (te, ta, tica tica and rests) and how to read it when it's written musically in bars. They have also been playing various percussion instruments with big smiles on their faces!!
South Cares Visit - Being Safe Online
Representatives from Souths Cares including ambasador Yileen Gordon, visited on Wednesday to speak with students in Year 3-6. This session helped students to gain an understanding of how important it is to be safe whilst online and enhanced the students’ knowledge of what eSafety is, and how they can practice being safe when using devices or accessing online platforms playing particular attention to the areas of Cyberbullying, Online Gaming, and Social Media platforms.
Sporting Schools
We apply for grants through the Sporting Schools program so that we can provide sporting opportunities free to children and their families in order to help students build the confidence and capability to be active for life. This term students in all classes participated in a Sydney FC run soccer workshop. The grant also allowed us to purchase upgraded equipment for our school which should arrive in time for Term 2. Next term K-2 students will participate in Gymnastics workshops and 3-6 will be going to NCIE in Redfern for swimming lessons.
Parent Working Bees and Volunteering
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful volunteers and the P&C for giving up their time and coordinating the beautification and improvement of our school grounds. With this support we are able to expedite projects to ensure that our children and chickens have access to a neat tidy and welcoming school site. If you are interested in getting involved in your school, please visit the P&C webpage to register interest - https://www.lppspc.com/volunteer
Strategic Improvement Plan
Throughout the term, we have been busy using feedback and data provided by staff, students and parents, and aligning this with current research and best practice to create the basis for our next 4 year plan. Our strategic directions for La Perouse Public School are:
- Student Growth and Attainment focusing on; high expectations, data driven practice and student engagement and attendance.
- Wellbeing focusing on; student leadership and voice, positive behaviour for learning and restorative practice, social emotional learning and wellbeing programs.
- Connected Community focusing on; collaborative partnerships and inclusive school community and voice.
Public Speaking at La Perouse Public School
During Term Two, we will be holding a school-wide competition to decide our Stage 2 and 3 school representatives for the Department's Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. The students are already busy working on their speeches and we look forward to working together to develop their skills in public speaking. All students in K-6 are invited to take part in the school competition, more details will be sent out next term.
NAIDOC
Aunty Selina, Vicky, Missy, Maxine and Berlinda have been working hard this term to plan for our 2021 NAIDOC celebrations. This year we will hold a week of learning during week 10 of next term, which will include: a flag raising ceremony, Gamay Rangers incursion, Indig cooking, Indigenous games and K-2 Kadoo incursion / 3-6 Kurnell excursion with Dean Kelly. If you would like to get involved please pop in and see Aunty Selina.
Warm regards,
