Note from the Principal
Good Afternoon Buena Vista Parents,
I can't believe we are already at the start of February. This is a short month, but it is packed full. If you missed it, our school Districted started their "Hearts YOUnited" campaign this month which promotes Kindness and Compassion throughout the WCSD Community! Throughout the month there will be various classroom, school, and district activities to promote learning and awareness around kindness, compassion, gratitude, wellness, diversity, equity and inclusion. See our picture above as we had he whole school come out and show support for spreading kindness across our community.
Yesterday was the start of the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Tiger. Many of our classrooms are doing activities and lessons to teach our students about the East Asian cultures that celebrate the traditions and celebrations connected to the Lunar New Year. Yesterday was also the kickoff of Black History Month and teachers will be including lessons teaching our students about important and influential black leaders and activists. This month is busy, but full of excited learning.
There are so many things to learn about at school throughout the year. It is important to take some time to really focus on specific areas of interest and importance around as they come up on our calendar. I am including some resources for parents who may want to learn and talk more about the Lunar New Year and Black History Month with your children at home.
Resources:
Celebrating and Learning about Black Culture (ReadingRockets)
50 Resources for Black History Month (KQED)
Black History Month for Kids and Families in the Bay Area (510 Families)
10 Fun Ways to Celebrate the Lunar New Year (Parenting)
Lunar New Year Family-Friendly in the Bay Area (510 Families)
28 Children's Books about the Lunar New Year (Colors of Us)
Student Learning
This week Mrs. Sumnicht's class was working on learning about homophones in class. Mrs. Sumnicht was sharing silly jokes that used homophones to make the punchline funny. Students were able to collaborate with their partners to practice identifying the correct homophone to use to make a sentence make sense! They were also working on writing fictional narrative pieces and revising to make sure that their stories had all of the important components....hook, characters, setting, problem, lots of juicy details, and a resolution. I can' t wait to read the final piece!
I was also able to watch as Ms.Ha's fourth graders spent time in the Friendship Club up with Mr Haller's students outside so that they can begin to get to know each other. Our students in Mr. Haller's class will spend time eating snack, practicing social skills, and pairing up for regular classroom activities with our 4th and 5th grade students. Last week Mr. Haller met with the 4th and 5th grade classes to teach our students about Ability Awareness. We are very excited to give all of our students this experience of coming together outside and being part of our shared community.
