Minnich's Memo

Dear Nashua Families,

There have been so many exciting things that have happened at Nashua the past couple weeks!

**The PTA Back to School BINGO was so fun last night!

**There was a great turnout at Parent Orientation, and we loved seeing so many parents at the Love and Logic Parenting sessions!

**Harold Kuntz from FOX4 spoke to Nashua 5th graders about how to effectively ask questions to others. He used his expertise interviewing athletes to share skills and strategies with our scholars.

**We started superSTAR referrals again, which celebrates students who go above and beyond at school. These students get their picture taken, a phone call home from the principal, and a prize!

**Bailey, the therapy dog, started coming to Nashua to interact with students. She is a great listener as students read to her!

**We honored first responders at our Patriot Day event on Monday. We appreciate and honor those who serve and have served in positions to protect us and keep us safe.

**The Staley Orchestra put on a wonderful performance for our 5th graders.

As always, thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to meet the needs of all Nashua students! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Courtney Minnich

Portrait of a Graduate - September - Learner's Mindset

Nashua will continue to implement our Portrait of a Graduate initiative this year. This program is designed to teach students different life skills that they can use to be successful. We look forward to communicating engaging ways that students will be asked to utilize the competencies in their learning throughout the year.

During the month of September, Nashua Elementary will be focusing on Learner’s Mindset as a part of the district’s Portrait of a Graduate program. Learner’s Mindset is demonstrated by students being able to demonstrate a deep enthusiasm and motivation for learning. Student’s should also be able to add to or adjust their thinking by learning about others’ perspectives. Nashua will encourage learner’s mindset by teaching classroom lessons and recognizing when students have a positive learner’s mindset.

At the end of the month, every teacher will nominate one student in their class for the Learner's Mindset Award. These students will receive an award and have their picture taken. Additionally, I sign will be placed in front of their house saying that they are a Portrait of a Graduate award winner.

****Repeated Information*****

NKC Attendance Policy

As we begin a new school year, I wanted to send attendance reminders to ensure your child is at school regularly. It is important that your child attends school on time, every day.

The NKC SCHOOL BOARD POLICY states:

When a child is enrolled in NKC Schools, the North Kansas City Schools Board of Education expects:

1. The student to attend school regularly.

2. Parents/guardians of the student to communicate regularly with the office staff regarding the student’s absences.

3. Every student should strive for 95% or above attendance. This would mean missing no more than 8 days of school in the school year. (State guidelines deem attendance rates of 95% or better as necessary for optimal learning).

OTHER IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE INFORMATION:

1. If your child is not maintaining attendance above 93%, you will be notified immediately. If the attendance keeps dropping, Nashua staff/administration will reach out and ask you to come to the school for a meeting to discuss attendance concerns and complete an attendance contract.

2. If your student’s attendance continues to fall, the school is required by state law to report all instances of educational neglect, including poor school attendance, to Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect hotline.

3. Regular attendance and punctuality help students develop and maintain a good attitude toward school and relate positively toward school achievement. Tardiness and absences can be upsetting for students, disrupting their schedules, requiring readjustment to the class routine, and interfering with learning. Even missing just a couple days here and there can negatively impact a students' learning progression.

4. If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the school’s attendance line at 816-321-5162 by 9:30 a.m. on the day of your child’s absence. If no contact is made by 9:30 a.m., every attempt will be made to reach a parent or emergency contact to verify the reason for the absence to ensure the child’s safety and parent awareness of their child’s whereabouts.

Please make your child's attendance a priority this year. We appreciate your help in ensuring your child is at school on time, every day!
