D200 Return to Learn District Letter
After careful consideration the District 200 Board of Education and administration have decided to begin optional hybrid, in-person instruction on Monday, Feb. 1.
As we continue to weigh the consequences of keeping children out of school with the COVID-19 pandemic that continues into the foreseeable future, we believe Feb. 1 is time to bring students back into classrooms with safety measures to minimize virus transmission. It will take a full staff and family commitment to keep our schools and community as safe as we can, and we will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal.
We continue to work with the McHenry County Health Department and are following their guidance to use both the metrics along with the recommended mitigation steps updated on Dec. 18, which we have in place for a safe return to school. Those steps include face coverings, social distancing, hand washing, contact tracing and building disinfection.
Students and staff will be temperature screened before entering school, parents are required to self-certify that their students are not exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19 each day, all will be required to wear face coverings, and social distancing will be practiced throughout school buildings.
We cannot stress this point enough. We ask any students or staff members who are sick to please stay home. In order to achieve success, we need cooperation on that point. Remote learning options will still be available for those students who cannot attend school due to illness or exposure to the virus.
Recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach for each family, parents will have the option of keeping their child in our remote learning program. For those students, we will continue to work diligently to provide the best virtual education possible.
While we’re proud of the way our students, staff and families have adapted to remote learning, we always knew it was no substitute for in-person classroom teaching. We also know how difficult this period of isolation has been for our students’ emotional well-being. Our concern has always been for our students’ social/emotional growth as well as their academic growth.
