6th Grade Weekly Newsletter
3/22 - 3/26
AMI-X - Tuesday, March 30th
- Students will NOT be reporting to school that day.
- Students will participate in their learning remotely by working on assigned work either on paper that will be sent home the previous day and/or online work assigned through Google Classroom. Teachers are expected to post a video on Google Classroom to walk students through the directions that day.
- There will be no live instruction for students on this learning day (aka NO Google Meets).
- Students are encouraged to email their teachers if and/or when they have questions but to be patient for a response since teachers will be in and out the building for vaccinations.
After returning to full in-person, please keep in mind the following things (repeat):
- Bring a water bottle to refill throughout the day since water fountains will still be unusable.
- Bring their school IDs everyday to every class (especially lunch) to make the process smooth to make sure the lunch line moves fast.
- Wear a secure and fitted face mask at ALL times unless eating or drinking. The CDC recommends that you wash face masks after every use as well.
- Try to keep as socially distant as possible in classrooms, hallways, and the lunch room.
- Wash or sanitize hands after EACH class before transitioning to another.
- Wash or sanitize hands after using the restroom.
- Wash or sanitize hands after using a tissue.
- Bring a CHARGED Chromebook to participate in most classes.
Congrats to our 6th Grade Students who received this week's Character Strong Trait!
Information from the 6th Grade Team
ELA
This week, we started our Close Reading Unit and our Social Justice Reading Passion Project. We will start to work on close reading strategies such as looking at words and vocabulary by considering the denotative and connotative meanings. We will then move into tone vs. mood when it comes to word choice as well. Every week will be a different close reading strategy to go over, practice, and work towards mastery.
The Social Justice Reading Passion Project will act as our overall assessment of this unit. It is an ongoing project that will focus on a social justice issue by reading a book and then using close reading strategies to determine overall meaning by using comprehension, author's craft and structure, and applying historical/cultural contexts. Students' one goal by next Wednesday, March 31st is to finish their project proposals: choose their social justice issue, their book that matches the issue, their reading standards, and their project idea.
Science
This week in science we are finishing up our Seasons Project. Next week we will prepare for our Seasons Test on Friday, April 2nd. You should see a study guide on Monday (we will finish it on Tuesday). Please help your child prepare for this test. Thank you!
Math
In math, this week students have learned about independent and dependent variables along with how to create an equation, table, and graph to represent the relationship between the two variables. We are currently working on a quick project putting everything we have learned this week together.
This project is on Google Classroom and will be due at the beginning of class on March 31st. Speaking of the 31st, we will start a 2-day review on this date to get ready for our Topic 4 Final Assessment on April 2nd. I will be staying for Academic Lab on April 1st to help students with preparing for this assessment, just remember to fill out the academic lab form to sign up for this day.
If there is anything I can help with or any questions, please email me! Have a great weekend!
Social Studies
This week we are closing out our Unit in Central/Latin America. At the beginning of the unit, the students performed a Gallery Walk in support of our essential question "What matters and why" regarding the issues facing the people of these nations. This week, students began working on their own Gallery Walk, choosing one Central/Latin American country to highlight and answer the essential question of "what matters and why" through images.
This project will be our final assessment for this unit. It has been exciting seeing how engaged the students have been both examining and finding pictures to emphasize their perspective of the essential question. The due date for this assessment is next Friday (4/2).
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
