Update For Intermediate Families From Principal Gene Hoskins
Information On Celebrating Spartan Day, Upcoming Youth Vaping Podcast For Parents
I hope that all of our students, staff members, and our families have had an opportunity to enjoy the sunshine this weekend! Last week we celebrated our first annual "Spartan Day" as part of the March Spirit Week. It was an outstanding week in our Intermediate School and the sunshine this weekend was a great way to end a wonderful week!
Reminder- Friday, March 26 is a Half-day of School:
This Friday, March 26 is a half-day of school for students in the Elementary and Intermediate Schools. Students in grades 4-6 will be released at 10:40 AM so that teachers can review student data, and make instructional decisions moving forward based on the most recent student data. Students will be provided with a bagged lunch at the 10:40 dismissal this Friday, March 26
Spartan Day and March Spirit Week Recap:
I want to thank all of the students and staff members who participated in our March Spirit Week! Capping our week was a wonderful new tradition started by the Intermediate School Improvement Team: Spartan Day!!! This was a special day celebrating everything Sodus. The ISIT created this day as a way of providing a break in routine in the daily grind of the month of March. March is traditionally one of the toughest in terms of student discipline- it can be very long. Our Intermediate School Student Council went all-out to help celebrate Spartan Day by staying afterschool on Thursday and decorating the hallways with signs, streamers, and balloons. The ISIT also sponsored two homeroom contests - a contest for the most spirited homeroom (as measured by the highest percentage of participation in wearing purple and gold), and a contest for the best door decorations. The winning homerooms won a special lunch with pizza and ice cream. I want to recognize and thank all of the Intermediate School Staff Members who helped decorate doors and the hallways, many of them staying past the work day to help with these decorations.

SEL Tip: Social-Emotional Learning Tips From Sodus MTSS Coordinator Kristin DeFeo
SEL TIP #27 - Social Awareness - “The abilities to understand the perspectives of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, & contexts. This includes the capacities to feel compassion for others, understand broader historical and social norms for behavior in different settings, and recognize family, school, and community resources and supports.”
A key component is understanding others and their perspectives. Truly listening to and hearing each other, and being willing to understand.
Perspective Taking
Suspend - Your own views, opinions and judgements.
Ask - How does the situation look from the other person’s perspective?
Check - Your understanding of their perspective by asking questions. (*From Brene Brown - "I'm curious about..," "I'm wondering...," "Walk me through that...")
Avoid - Justifying/explaining why they are wrong to see the situation that way.
Visualize - How they feel, given their perspective on the situation.
Convey - Empathy for their situation.
