SCHOOL VALUE THIS TERM: 'TO BE AN ORIGINAL VOGELTOWN LEARNER'
These are for our Vogeltown learners to be:
Inclusive (Whakaru), Respectful (Whakaute), Original (Tipu), Courageous (Kaha) and Kind (Atawhai).
These values were chosen by the staff, learners and community of Vogeltown School in 2019.
This term we are focusing on being 'respectful'.
TE REO FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
KIA ORA VS WHANAU, FROM MR O
This term is another 'hard working' term - a 10 week term with lots of learning planned. The Future focused curriculum team here at Vogeltown have planned some great units of work that will engage our leaners and cover many areas of our new Vogeltown curriculum.
The Taranaki and Huatoki teams are doing their inquiry this term around 'Toys' and exploring the many facets of what makes a good toy, toys over the ages, designing their own toys and developing the impact toys have on society.
The Paetoki team are doing their inquiry around 'Building a Business' a wonderful inquiry that we do every second year here at Vogeltown - the culmination of which is a 'Market Night' where the kids sell their items to the community (we did this in 2021, but was cut short by a lockdown).
We are looking forward to all the wonderful creations and 'originality' that our Vogeltown learners will develop in these inquiries over the term.
As with every Term 3, we begin training for the school cross country. This event has changed over the years and we do training in many different forms. For the purists, there will still be running club and many opportunities to get some k's under the belt. Cross Country training is a run or walk at children's own pace. It is a chance to push themselves each day and to see how much progress they can make with their fitness - similar to making progress in reading. We will still have a 'traditional' cross country run in week 6 of this term and we will have entrants in to the New Plymouth Cross Country in week 8.
Next week we look forward to our Learning Conferences with whanau. These are very important meetings to catch up with your child's teacher about the progress they are making and school and their learning goals for Term 3. If you have not done so already, please book in a time to catch up - we are looking forward to having parents on site again and to engage in learning conversations about your children.
We look forward to working in partnership with you all to have another successful term of learning, fun and experiences!
Nga mihi nui Vogeltown whanau,
Mr O and the VS team
WELCOME TO VOGELTOWN SCHOOL!
A massive welcome to Vogeltown School to all our new tamariki! We had an awesome assembly today to welcome our new 'Vogeltowners'. As with every new Vogeltowner, we wear the 'Korowai o manaaki' or the 'Cloak of care'. We have now had over 400 Vogeltown learners and 10 Vogeltown Kaiako (teachers) wear this cloak - you can feel the manaaki and wairua when you wear it.
Welcome to: Angus Johnson, Kora Haimona, Eli Jones, Maja Cassidy, Ryder McIntyre, Moana Bonzon, Chloe Chapman (all New Entrants), Zachary Amer (Rm 3), Austen French (Rm 15)
Also welcome to Celeste McLean, who started teaching in Room 8 today.
We know you will all enjoy your time as part of the massive Vogeltown whanau!
The senior side deck is completed - we are just putting the finishing touches on some areas - planting up the gardens, new tiles under the bell, latches for doors, our values mural back up and changing the openers in the doorways. You will notice on the new double doors we now have our school 'tohu' on them. Once these touches are completed, we will have a 'proper opening' of this space.
The work has begun at the Junior School. We unfortunately made a last minute change and had to move Rm 4 to the library on the Senior side - a big thanks to Ms Kissick and the Rm 4 whanau for helping with this massive transition for the start of term 3.
The inside of the Junior school has had massive holes cut in to walls as we make way for new 'glass sliders' to go in to these spaces. This will not only open up the classrooms but allow the classrooms to collaborate more easily. It will also future proof these classrooms with new wall coverings, new lighting and new carpet. We can not wait to see this space completed.
There will be some disruption over the term. as spaces are completed we will bring Rm 4 back to the junior side and move Rm 3 in to Rm 5's space. We appreciate this is not ideal, but the pay off will be awesome!
We will put some photos up on facebook as we make this great transition at the Junior Side.
PROGRESS REPORTS & LEARNING CONFERENCES - TERM 3 2022
By now you will have received your child(ren)s Progress report for Term 2. These reports give you an indication of how your child is progressing in maths, reading and writing - our foundation curriculum skills for learning.
Also on the Progress report you will have seen on the top part of the report, an indication of how your child is going against our IROCK school values - being Inclusive, Respectful, Original, Courageous and Kind. These of course can change over time.
Next week we have our 'Learning Conferences' with your child(ren)s Kaiako. This Progress report will be talked about at their conference and learning goals for Term 3 will be set. It will again be booked through our school app 'Skool Loop'. We always try to get 100% attendance to these conferences. The link for Learning Conferences can be found on the school app (Skool Loop). If you have not used it before, go to New Zealand, choose Taranaki, choose Vogeltown School. Then go in to the main screen and click on 'interviews'. Choose your child's teacher, then choose a date, then select a time that suits.
A reminder that we close the school at 2pm on both Wednesday and Thursday afternoons - thanks for accomodating this for us so we can fit in all the conferences over these nights.
We also ask/encourage/recommend that parents/caregivers wear a mask to the interviews. If you do not feel comfortable wearing one, that is fine our teachers will wear one.
Room 8 held their parent interviews at the end of last term so will not be having learning conferences next week.
Congratulations to those learners who received principal's awards at this morning's full school assembly:

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS 2022
School Board Elections
School board members are active leaders in our schools. They have an important role of supporting strong professional leadership and ensuring effective teaching for all students through informed governance. Parents/caregivers and people in the wider community can be parent representatives. School boards need to represent the diversity of their school communities to ensure a bright future for all our children.
COVID-19 UPDATE AT VOGELTOWN SCHOOL - WEEK 1, TERM 3
The start of this term has been a lot better than the end of Term 2. Our average attendance for this week has been at 88.0%. Thanks to all those families who communicated with us and let us know about any covid cases within families over the holiday break.
We sent out some communication for the start of this term - especially around the 'strong recommendation' from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education to be wearing masks at school from Yr 4 and above.
See the link to our most recent covid memo below.
Please remember we are still in a pandemic and we must continue to keep being vigilant with hand washing and keeping safe.

CLASS REPS FOR TERM 3 & 4
As with every year, the Class reps change over in Term 3 and 4 as the tenureship for the first two terms Class Reps (The 'OG's) comes to an end. Our Class Reps are always the in the Paetoki team - our Year 5 and 6 whanau.,
The process for selecting new Class Reps is a tough for our teachers - however having two groups of Class reps over the year allows more of our Paetoki learners to enjoy and partake in this special leadership role.
The role and purpose of a Class Rep is to:
They are there to represent the students in their class and all the students of Vogeltown School.
They act as a link between their class and other groups – the full Class reps group, teachers, and the students of Vogeltown.
Class reps have to be willing and able to put forward other peoples views even if they disagree with them.
To have a group of students who will run a class meeting (with teacher guidance) twice per term. The agenda for such a meeting will be put together by the Leadership team.
To bring together this group of students in one community and meet with the leadership team twice per term to discuss the class meetings and findings.
To use the ‘Class Reps’ to organise and run lunchtime games at both the senior and junior schools with teacher guidance and support.
The Class reps for Term 3 and 4 are:
Rm 8 - Baxter Coutts and Lucah McCarvill
Rm 10 - Owen Muir and Madeline O'Conner
Rm 12 - Bianca Corbett-Howcroft and Katelyn wang
Rm 13 - Caru Nieuwoudt and Dylan Venables
Rm 16 - Aalliyah Ball and Ivy Read
Ka mau te wehi to our new Class Reps for T3 and 4 2022!
Birthdays this week -
These Vogeltown students had their birthday this week - Happy birthday to these Vogeltowners:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TEAM!
Parents/caregivers are encouraged to pre-enrol their children now for late 2022 and 2023.
If you know of any families in zone who are wanting to have a child start this year, please encourage them to make contact with the office. We would really like to have all 'in zone' enrolments by the 26 August, as this will aid our ability to plan for 2023 and the number of Out of zone enrolments we can take in 2023.
MR O'S FRIENDLY REMINDERS
1) Please remember to contact the school office if your child is absent or going to be late. You can report absences via Skool Loop, text 021 753 680 or ph 06 753 6843. Please do not use SeeSaw for student absences - these must come through the office.
2) Please be courteous before and after school with parking around the school sites. We have lots of kids and not enough parks, so please allow time to get to school and be patient around the streets.
