ALVORD UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
Distrito Escolar Unificado de Alvord
A Message from the Superintendent...
On behalf of the Board of Education, I want to wish everyone a healthy and safe New Year's celebration. Furthermore, as we approach the New Year's holiday and our return to school on January 3, 2022, I want to assure everyone that we are prepared to safely welcome back our students for the second semester. We will continue to strictly follow all of our safety protocols and diligently track the spread of COVID in our schools. We will also continue to restrict visitor-access to all of our campuses.
Our COVID Help Team is poised with thousands of tests that we have secured to distribute to our students and staff, as we have done this entire school year. Our team will also continue to stand on the shoulders of science and work closely with Riverside County Public Health System COVID-Response Schools Team to track the local spread and make adjustments to our protocol as necessary. Find Alvord's COVID Help Team contact information below.
We Need our Students and Parents to Home Health Screen for Symptoms Everyday...
The impact of the holidays on the spread of COVID was expected as rates continued to climb since Winter Recess began. As of today, December 29, 2021, in Riverside County, there have been 1,247 new cases (0.3% increase) this week, and a 7-day average of 32.1 cases per 100K. The 7-day positive test rate is currently 15.1% (6.8% increase). Plus, health officials in Riverside County reported the first case of the Omicron variant in Riverside County on December 17, 2021. There are currently 9 total Omicron cases. Delta remains prominent.
To stop the spread and keep our schools open, we need our families to health screen each and every morning before sending your children to school. Students with any of the following symptoms should stay home from school until a negative COVID test can be confirmed and the symptoms improve:
- Fever (100.4°F/38°C or higher) or chills
- Cough
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Loss of taste or smell that started in the last 10 days (Children may say that food “tastes bad” or “tastes funny”)
- Feeling out of breath or having a hard time breathing
- Diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
- Fatigue
- Muscle aches or body aches
Unlike the Delta variant, many patients with Omicron are not losing their taste or smell. Omicron patients describe a bit of a scratchy, sore throat as an early symptom. Bottom line, keep your child home if they are ill. Contact your child’s doctor and have your child tested for COVID-19. Contact your child's school. Keep your child at home until you get their test results and please report them to the school as soon as possible. Students who exhibit symptoms will be sent home until the school has evidence that the child's condition is not due to COVID.
Keep your child and family safe. See the video below from CDPH on when to get a COVID test.
COVID news from Sacramento...
On Monday, December 27, Governor Newsom announced that California will align with the CDC’s updated guidelines for isolation and quarantine times. While the new guidelines apply to everyone, including children, we expect there will be more specific guidance directed at schools in the weeks to come. When we return to school on January 3, 2022, we will follow the same guidelines currently in place to protect our students and their families, and our staff and their families. See the protocol below.
In Closing....
On behalf of your Board of Education and all of our principals and school teams, thank you in advance for being extra cautious when we return to school on Monday, January 3, 2022. Remind your child to get back into the habit of good school hygiene practices and the importance of securely wearing a face mask.
We made it through the first semester because we worked together. And now that the winter, flu-season surge is upon us, let's brace ourselves and buckle down to stop the spread and keep everyone safe and healthy and learning and participating in the school experience as normally as possible.
Let's continue to do everything in our power to keep our schools open and our community safe.
We can do it! Together.
Stay healthy. Get tested. Be well.
Sincerely,
Allan Mucerino
