Weekly Reminders February 8-12

Raven Homeschool, Juneau Office

A Note from your Teacher

I learned something new about myself this past month. My body does not adjust quickly to time changes. The whole week I was in Tennessee, my body did not want to go to bed five hours early. As a result, I was staying up till 2am EST. That would not have been so terrible were it not for having to get up by 7am! After a week of that, I was a wreck. I am so glad to be back in the time zone my body is accustomed to. How about you? Are you getting the sleep your body needs? Are you listening to its quiet cues of what you need to stay healthy, alert, and strong? Take some time this weekend to get some rest and recharge. If there is one thing you can do to improve you and your children’s thinking and learning that requires no effort--go to bed. Give yourself a treat of a good night’s sleep. ~Theresa

Thank you to all my families who have submitted their grades for Q2 and/or let me know if they were going to be a bit late because of sickness, etc. I will not be in the office Monday-Wednesday next week as I will be attending the state special education conference in Anchorage. I fly back to Juneau on Wednesday night and will be in the office on Thursday AND Friday (which is usually my day off). I’m looking forward to sharing what I learn next week at the conference with our Raven families. ~Joan

Update on ESSA

Here is some information regarding the DEED's timeline for Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Per the Commissioner's update, "Just over one month ago, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law at the national level. This act reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) and will replace No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Alaska’s current NCLB Waiver over the course of the next 18 months. Alaska’s transition to and implementation of ESSA will be through a thoughtful process informed by meaningful consultation with state and local education stakeholders."

College Goal Alaska events

We are excited to announce 2016’s free College Goal Alaska (CGA) events. CGA is all about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is THE most importantstep to getting financial aid. CGA events provide expert assistance offered by representatives from the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE), financial aid staff at Alaska’s colleges and universities and community volunteers. Events are heldin many locations throughout the state, and via distance delivery through webinars. For a complete list of event locations and times refer towww.CollegeGoalAK.org.

Remember: The FAFSA is needed for many types of aid, from grants to loans to work-study, from federal to state and some private sources. It's even the applicationfor the Alaska Performance Scholarship. Please encourage your students to attend a CGA event and to fill out a FAFSA regardless of income.

For those who would prefer to participate via distance delivery, two webinars are offered with step-by-step instructions on completing a FAFSA:

Thursday, February 18, 2016. 6:00-7:30 pm

Tuesday, March 29, 2016. 6:00-7:30 pm

Webinar participants will also have the opportunity to schedule a one-to-one meeting for personalized assistance and be provided a detailed, voiced over presentationto follow at their own pace.
