The Lowdown on Ginger.
Tis the time of year where gingerbread men make their appearance in kitchens throughout the country. Ginger is a great addition to your plant powered medicine cabinet (in your kitchen), because we know that #foodismedicine.
Dr. Cono states that the "gingerols", a class of phytochemicals in ginger are not only anti-inflammatory and form potent antioxidants in the body, but also may help the body destroy certain cancer cells. Not only have many people enjoyed adding a little ginger for an upset stomach, nausea and certain causes of diarrhea, but a little extra ginger root may help support bone and joint health too.
So we know that ginger is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, but what does this mean? Well, common foods that feed inflammation are red meat, fried foods, sugar, white flour and breads.
These foods fuel the fire and the “itis” in your body: think arthr(itis), gastr(itis), etc. Inflammation was designed as a mechanism to heal the body, but when the body is under constant stress partly due to eating inflammatory foods, the body loses the ability to fight- and then we end up with chronic and constant inflammation which can lead to chronic disease. When we use food as medicine, and really strive to be getting 9-13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day- we’re naturally consuming more anti-inflammatory foods that will help promote healing in the body.
Are you interested in learning more about getting to the root cause of some of your gastrointestinal problems? Do you know anyone else who might need to listen in on a group session?
This month on Fridays from 2-3:30 we are doing educational groups on the digestive system and why healing your gut can heal so many other common chronic conditions. RSVP at info@lifestylemedpc.com
