Where Learning Takes Flight
December Design Principle: Empathy and Caring
"Learning to stand in someone else's shoes, to see through their eyes, that's how peace begins. And it's up to you to make that happen. Empathy is a quality of character that can change the world."
~Barack Obama
Hello Glennwood Families!
Can you believe we are coming to the end of the year and the end of the first semester? It seems to have gone by so quickly! I know that over the last year and a half together we have endured difficult times but we have also had some wonderful, beautiful times. I feel so fortunate every day to be in this community with such incredible students, teachers and families.
I’d like to send out a huge thank you to our PTA and families for putting together a beautiful holiday treat table to show our staff how special they are. We truly feel the love every day from our families. Take a look at the pictures below- the table is so beautiful!
I hope everyone has a wonderful break and is able to make special memories with families and friends. I am looking forward to going “home” to Massachusetts to see my family and friends. We may even get some snow! As a kid, my grandmother always took my brother and me sledding- I hope we have enough snow to continue the tradition with my kids, Cameron and Gracie, this year!
Stay safe and healthy. I look forward to seeing everyone back in January of 2022!
Warmest regards,
Dr. Holly Brookins
Principal
Student COVID19 Vaccination Survey for Families
Our School Leadership Team would like to get an idea of student vaccination rates here at Glennwood. If you feel compelled, please complete this voluntary and anonymous survey to help us gather this data. We can share the percentages with the community once we have an idea of where we are with our student vaccination rates. Thank you to all who have already completed the survey.
As a reminder, once your child is fully vaccinated for COVID-19 with both shots of the vaccination series, please email Nurse Beth at ebarrington@csdecatur.net. Once we receive the email, we can update the information in Infinite Campus for you. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out through email or by calling the school at (404) 370-4435. Thank you for your help in this important matter.
Eagle Bookstore Donations Needed
Glennwood teachers give out Eagle Book Bucks to students who are working so hard to S.O.A.R. Students then have the opportunity to shop at the Eagle Bookstore and purchase a book to keep. Once a month we have a drawing from the Eagle Book Bucks bank and one student wins a gift card to Little Shop of Stories. Thank you for your help in advance! If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Rittenhouse at drittenhouse@csdecatur.net.
Asian American Pacific Islanders Sidekicks Program
Is your child part of the AAPI community? Consider becoming part of the AAPI Sidekick program!
To foster a sense of support and connection within the CSD AAPI community, AAPI high school student mentors will be grouped into pairs and matched up with AAPI elementary students.
There will be 5 in-person sessions occurring monthly on Fridays between 11:30 and 12:30 starting in January and going through May. Meetings will be held at the Glenwood ES campus and will follow Glennwood's Covid protocols.
This program is free and open to all identifying AAPI students at Glennwood ES.
The program is an initiative supported by CSD's Department of Equity and Student Services and Decatur HS's Asian Culture Club. Please complete the interest form by clicking HERE.

Special Tour of Nellie May Rowe Exhibit at the High
Catch the LAST DAY of the critically acclaimed and family-friendly exhibition, Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe at the High Museum of Art with a special tour led by the show’s curator and Glennwood parent, Dr. Katherine Jentleson.
Nellie Mae Rowe was born on July 4, 1900, on a farm in Fayetteville, Georgia, and showed early promise as an artist, but was not able to exercise her calling until much later in her life. In 1968, she reclaimed her love of art, transforming her home and yard into her “Playhouse” and making hundreds of lively drawings, about 50 of which are featured in this exhibition. Don’t miss the chance to experience Rowe’s wonderful world—including miniature reconstructions of her Playhouse !--and to share the powerful story of an African American artist who stayed true to herself and never let go of her passion.
The event is Sunday, Jan 9 at 11:30 am. To reserve a spot, please sign up on the sign-up genius!
Capacity is limited due to space limitations within the galleries, so please limit sign-up to one child and one parent if at all possible. If many families wish to join, we can add additional tour times.
If you cannot make it to the museum, or if you are interested in exploring Rowe’s art and story at home in advance of it, check out the High’s brand new LINK site, a suite of digital resources that includes interactive, video, and other content to deepen engagement with the museum’s collection and exhibitions.
