Maillet's Kindergarten Newsletter
Week Of April 27th
Highlights from last week....
In Reader's Workshop, we worked on how readers think while they read. We used our schema as we read our books. The children worked on making text to text connections while they read. They compared and contrasted characters in different stories.
In phonics, we focused on short vowels, b and d reversals and nonsense words.
In Math, we worked on number bonds and number sentences up to 10. We focused on subtracting or "breaking numbers apart" this week. We focused on number stories, writing the sentence and creating a number bond to match the sentence. We focused on reading number sentences to determine if we should add or subtract the numbers in the sentence.
In Science, we will continue our month long unit on life cycles. We extended our focus on the life cycle of a frog this week. We created a model to help us remember the life cycle a frog. We would like to watch the life cycle of a frog in action with having tadpoles in our classroom. Should any of you like to donate some tadpoles to the classroom, please let me know. I have been searching the ponds around my house, but I have not seen any yet!
In Social Studies, we concentrated on identifying sequential actions, such as first, next and last in stories and use them describe the life cycle of the frog.
In our Second Step program, we continued to learn about our own feelings and how they can change.
A peek at our learning this week....
In Reader's Workshop, we will be working on how readers think while they read. We will be using our schema as we read our books. The children are working on making text to text while they read. They will compare and contrast different fiction and non fiction stories regarding seeds and plants this week.
In phonics, we will focus on short vowels, building words and nonsense words.
In Math, we will be adding one to numbers 1-9 to see the pattern of the "next" number. We will also be finding the number that makes 10 using numbers 1-9. We will also work on looking at the number sentence to determine if the numbers should be added or subtracted.
In Science, we will continue our month long unit on life cycles. We will begin our unit on Plants. We will read several non fiction books and participate in several activities to help us understand the concept.
In Social Studies, we will really concentrate on identifying sequential actions, such as first, next and last in stories and use them describe the life cycle of the plant.
In our Second Step program, we will continue to learn about our own feelings and how they can change.
