Nike Scout News January 2024
Check out what's happening at Nike
Happy New Year!
I would like to wish a very Happy New Year to our Nike Family! I trust you had a wonderful winter break with family and friends. As we ring in the New Year it is an exciting time to reflect on our accomplishments and review goals for what we have left to do in this school year. Can you believe that we are halfway through this school year? Where did the time go? The work that is required of the school, the teachers, the students and their families has increased significantly during these past few years.
I wanted to share the Nike Scout’s Daily Pledge. Students recite this every morning.
Today I will be a good role model and team player.
I will be a clever problem solver who is kind, open and honest.
I will be in control of myself and keep trying when things get tough.
I AM a Nike Scout.
STEAM Club will look different this year. We will have STEAM Club after school (3rd and 4th grade ONLY) in February. Flyers will be sent home soon. After the 3rd/4th grade sessions, more information will be sent home regarding Spring STEAM sessions (1st/2nd grade).
On January 16th, Nike will have a Parent & Community Informational Meeting @ 5:30 in the library. Please see the flyer below for more information. We will have a PTO meeting afterwards at 6:30.
Finally, on behalf of Nike’s faculty and staff, thank you for your continued support of our students and the work we do for them. It is truly the community, parents, and staff partnering and working together that allows us to maintain the successes we have so long enjoyed here at Nike! As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact a teacher or me directly. We are here to work together to provide the best possible education for your student!

Go Scouts!
From Ms. Raeker
Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed winter break. This month we will be working on student goal setting to improve their success at school. I am excited to teach these skills to our students as I feel they are important life skills and will benefit them both now and in the future. As we return to school, please keep in mind that students should bring a coat to school during the colder weather. If your child needs a coat, hat, or gloves, please reach out to me. We have some available in various sizes for those who need them. I am excited to see your students back at school!
Feel free to reach out by emailing sraeker@mvr3.k12.mo.us or call 636 271 1444 and ask for Ms. Raeker.
From Nurse Jenny
.At this time of year, it is a good idea to talk with children about cold weather safety. Extra care is needed, especially in younger children, to be sure that frostbite does not occur.
It is important to check your children’s, even teens’, outerwear every day during extreme weather conditions. Warm jackets, hats, scarves, boots, and an extra pair of dry gloves in their pockets will protect them during extremely cold temperatures.
Develop an emergency plan and teach your children your emergency plan in case you are not home before the bus comes to pick them up. If a bus is delayed, they need to know where, when, and how to get help if they think they are waiting outside for a bus longer than they should or if they sense danger. Tell your child that if you are not home while they are waiting outside for the bus, how long they may wait outside, where to go in the event the bus is delayed, and what the dangers and risks of extreme weather are.
Explain danger signs and risks of when to seek help:
the child gets cold or wet, especially boots or gloves
the child feels pain or numbness anywhere especially hands, feet, ears, or nose
the child senses they have waited longer than five minutes when you have alerted them temperatures have dipped into the teens, especially on a windy day
the child thinks they may have frostbite which behaves like a burn and requires medical attention.
Teach your child about your cold weather plan even if you are not there to help them. Be sure they know
when to ask for help,
where to find safe shelter in an emergency, and
how to protect themselves with proper winter clothing and an understanding of danger signs.
Stay warm and safe. Happy winter!

Art
Hello from Nike’s Art Studio! The last week before break many students chose to create elves and each one turned out adorable. We discussed building from basic shapes and our young artists created wonderfully.
Some of our Nike artists will have work displayed at Central Office for the month of January.
Communication is key! I can best be reached via email at cpatterson@mvr3.k12.mo.us

Title Reading
Mrs. Hollstein's class practices reading skills daily focusing on the 5 components of reading. It is so important to read at home for 20 minutes daily. At the end of this month, we will have a big celebration for students who receive Title 1 services and are completing their daily reading. Attached you will find some information about what you can do at home for your child to be successful in reading.
