NJSLA Testing
April 2019
Dear Parents & Guardians,
During the month of May, public schools in New Jersey will administer the NJSLA – New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (formerly PARCC) in English Language Arts and Mathematics for all students in grades 3-11.
The testing dates for our students are listed below:
Grade 5-8: May 7-9
Grade 3-4: May 14-16
Grade 5 & Science: May 28 -29
Make-Ups: May 14-29 as necessary
Components of the NJSLA-ELA, NJSLA-Math and NJSLA-Science test may include audio clips and therefore, students are permitted and encouraged to bring their own earbuds/headphones; a supplemental supply will be available in the school building for testing sessions.
Please do not make appointments for your child on testing days, especially in the morning. When a child is absent or tardy for any reason he/she will need to make up the test. We ask for your help and assistance in making sure that your child is ready and prepared to do his/her best on the testing days.
If you would like further information regarding the NJSLA assessments you may visit the following site: https://www.nj.gov/education/assessment/parents/.
Sincerely,
Misty Weiss

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Screening for Students: Sat., May 11 at DEBORAH Heart and Lung Center
The children in our communities NEED YOUR HELP!
On Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at 200 Trenton Road, Browns Mills, NJ, Deborah Heart and Lung Center is hosting a no-cost Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) screening for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 years old. We need your assistance in spreading the word and helping us get up to 300 children registered!
According to the American Heart Association, SCA, the result of an undetected and undiagnosed heart abnormality, is the number one cause of adolescent death in the U.S. It can happen before the age of 20, and often strikes healthy teenagers with no prior warning or symptoms.
There have been numerous tragic deaths reported in the news during the last few years, right in our own backyard, including:
*A Holmdel High School student dies while playing lacrosse
*A 14-year-old in the Bronx suddenly collapses and dies during non-contact football practice
*An 18-year-old high school student in Teaneck dies in her sleep
*A Voorhees Township soccer player dies in her sleep during a team sleepover
*A Red Bank Regional High School basketball player collapses and dies during a scrimmage
The Sudden Cardiac Arrest screening, sponsored by Deborah Hospital Foundation, is offered at no cost, and includes:
*Blood pressure, height and weight
*Heart auscultation (listening for a heart murmur)
*Electrocardiogram (ECG)
*If needed, an Echocardiogram (ultrasonic heart imaging)
Confidential results will be delivered to each parent -- or directly to the student if they are over the age of 18 years -- before they leave, after review by one of Deborah Heart and Lung Center’s board certified Cardiologists. All screenings are scheduled by appointment, so there is no downtime waiting. The entire process typically takes less than one hour to complete.
SCA does not discriminate -- whether an athlete, in the marching band, a member of the chess club, or a video gamer -- and your children could be at risk of experiencing this deadly event. Since 2015, Deborah has screened more than 1,000 students, and found approximately 5% needed additional follow-up and assessment by a Pediatric Cardiologist.
Please distribute the enclosed flyer to every student, coach, and teacher at your school. We’d also appreciate if you could “email blast” it to all parents or guardians of your students, the PTA and your local community leaders. And please remind your parents that although the event is free of charge, online pre-registration is required to reserve a spot.
Register at: https://www.deborahfoundation.org/
This is truly a life-saving event, and we at Deborah are proud to be able to offer it to the community. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Yours in health,
Christy Hemmes, LPN

5th Grade - Studying the Earth's Major Systems and Cycles
- Students have been Students used a gridded map to calculate the areas of salt, fresh and frozen water on the Earth's surface while studying Earth's Systems in Science class. They then created a bar graph in the hallway with sticky notes to represent the ratio of salt to fresh water which sparked conversation in other elementary classrooms about the amount of available water we have on Earth.
