Message from Ms. Lovejoy
We know that the past year has been incredibly challenging for many of our students and their families. Everyone is eager for your student to return to school full-time! Unfortunately, the physical distancing guidelines in place by the CDC do not provide us with an option to return to in-person learning for all students 5 days/week at this time. While we wait for a change in those guidelines, we are encouraged and excited to implement two strategies that were approved by the school board to increase face to face learning time for students in spring 2021.
As a reminder- the first strategy provides a Wednesday rotation and will begin on April 7th for cohort A and April 14 for cohort B. There is no school on Friday, April 16th. By rotating Wednesdays, we can incrementally add face to face learning time for all hybrid students. The school hours on Wednesday are 8:50AM-12:30PM. Car riders will begin at 12:20PM.
The second strategy is a “targeted approach...utilizing verified student data.” Please understand, the second strategy will not look the same for all students because it asks us to identify what supports and resources each student needs to be most successful this spring.
The second strategy requires us to truly examine and articulate our commitment to equity. Allocating available resources using an equity lens does not mean that every student needs or will receive the same resources or schedule. There will be a team of people making the decisions about students being eligible for additional time. This is not something your homeroom teacher will determine alone or in isolation. We must look at our schoolwide capacity and resources before making decisions about individual students.

THE CHICKADEE BOOK AWARD
It’s Chickadee Book Award Voting Time
Students participated in voting for their favorite Chickadee book. The Chickadee Award is an annual picture book project for Maine students in grades K-4. Students have had the opportunity to listen to each of the ten highlighted picture books and then vote for their favorite Chickadee book.
This is a book award that is determined solely by our Maine K-4 students. It's an opportunity for their opinions to be shared and recorded. The book with the most votes receives the Chickadee Book Award honor and it is signified with a golden award sticker.
A committee of librarians, teachers and early literacy professionals read books published in the previous year to compile a list of ten books that are read to students known as the Chickadee Award Books. The books on the 2020-2021 list were published in 2019.
Stay tuned to find out which book the Maine students choose this year!

INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES CORNER
Families,
Earlier this year I shared a bit about your child's math program Math In Focus originating in Singapore. I also shared the importance of learners building understanding of math concepts by using concrete materials, visualizing problems with pictures, and finally solving abstractly with numbers and computation. This is called the CPA approach.
I am excited to share that K-2 students have made terrific progress in math this year.
I have linked a series of short videos for you to enjoy and learn more about what this looks like in your child's math class. They are brought to you from one of the founders of our program, Dr. Yeap Ban Har. He is engaging and fun to watch.
Thank you for all your support with your child's home learning this year. K-2 Math Coach ~ Peggy Clements
