The Cannon Connection

Staff Information & Updates 11/04/13

From The Principal's Pen...

Please click on the image to the left of this post. Enlarge it and take a second to reflect on the message. I love this simple image. Although simple, it conveys so much about how change and doing things in different way can impact how we feel. Sure, it's easier to just do things the way we've always done them. It's more comfortable to execute those lessons that are tried and true. But, when we push ourselves to learn new things, to take risks and change the way we have always done things, the results can be truly magical.

As I think about all of the new things we are doing at Cannon. About all of the ways our staff stretches themselves, both professionally and personally, in a constant effort to truly transform from a teaching platform to a learning platform, I am amazed. As a STEM campus, with a 1:1 iPad initiative, we are doing LOTS of things in a new way. But, I can honestly say that I have never, in my educational career, worked with a staff that has adapted to such changes and the new expectations that come along with these changes, in such a dedicated and professional way. When you truly recognize that the changes we are making are what our kids deserve and what they need to help them be successful, not just at Cannon, but in life, it's really a pretty easy choice. It's a whole lot of work. But it truly is when the magic starts to happen. Thank you for all you do, every day for Cannon scholars. It's a privilege to be on your team!

  • TEAM MEETINGS - If your team has not yet emailed Tona to schedule a team meeting date (see last week's newsletter for details), please do so ASAP. As a reminder, this meeting needs to be scheduled to occur before we leave for the Thanksgiving break. Thanks!
  • PARENT SURVEY - The district is launching a Parent Survey on Wednesday, November 6th. All parents should receive an email from GCISD asking for their participation in the district-wide survey. This survey is to gather feedback from parents about the experience they and their children have had with academics and operations at our school. Please include this information in your communications with parents this week on your blogs, newsletters & websites. Their input is an important component in our decision-making and helps us evaluate our efforts, measure our progress and ensure that we are providing the best educational experience for their children! The survey will take 15-20 minutes to complete and will be open November 6-22. If they do not receive a direct link via email or want to complete the survey for multiple children, a link will be posted on our campus and district website on 11/6. Thanks for your help sending this message!
  • CURRICULUM REVIEW TEAMS - If you are interested in serving on either an ELA Curriculum Review Team (goal of horizontal alignment of ELA practices) or the Humanities Vertical Team (goal of vPrincipals, your help is needed in submitting names of vertical alignment in SS and ELA practices), please let Tona know by 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 5th. (ELA Curriculum Review Teams - These teachers will meet for a full day on either January 9 (K-4th grade) or January 16 (5-9th grade), The Humanities Vertical Team will meet from 8:30-3:30 on December 3 and on a half or full day in May (TBD).
