The Special Education Glossary was created in 2015. I walked into a team meeting and saw one of our SPED TECs, Ronnie Kessler, had written all of the acronyms on the white board so that parents and guardians had a visual to refer to during team meetings. I asked another SPED TEC, Natalia Kierul, who has experience in graphic design, to create a poster and our special education glossary was born. Since the 2015 version, we updated it in 2018 to reflect current general education assessments.

At the request of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Dr. Thomas Hehir and his associates prepared several reports on the status of special education in the Commonwealth using available data and resources. Dr. Hehir, a professor at Harvard University, is a former Director of the Office of Special Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education, and the former director of special education for the Boston and Chicago Public Schools.

If you are interested in an abbreviated overview of the report, pages 17-21 provide an overview of the recommendations.
