Digital Newsletter for Chehalem Elementary School
November 2016
Dear Chehalem Families,
The school year is in full swing and the children are learning so much and growing stronger in their character traits every day in our Chehalem community. Thank you for attending your child’s conference last week. We are very thankful for your support and know that students learn best when we work together.
Chehalem Reads: In the mornings we have implemented a reading time in the gym to help the day start on a positive and calming note. Please make sure your child has a book in their backpack so they are prepared to read when they enter the gym prior to 8:25 when our morning assembly starts. It is a great idea to have your child’s school library book live in the backpack so that they will always have a good book available to read. This is also an excellent way to add minutes to their reading logs. Thank you for your support in this venture.
School and district report cards for the 2015-16 school year are available at: http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. (Select Beaverton in the District Selection drop-down menu). I welcome the opportunity to share this information with you on the progress we are making to improve academic achievement for each student in the District. We are making progress.
State report cards began fifteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. Given the recent passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the expiration of Oregon's ESEA flexibility waiver on August 1, 2016, the State of Oregon will not assign an overall rating to schools for the 2015-16 school year. Our school ratings in the areas of student achievement and student growth on state assessments and graduation rates are available in our Report Card Rating Detail Sheet at the link above.
At Chehalem WE are committed to using this information to help tailor our school improvement plans and academic programs to meet the needs of every student. During the year, I will communicate with you frequently about student achievement and programs in place at our school to foster student learning and success.
If you have questions about our report card, please contact me. You may also have suggestions for improvements. Please share them! Thank you!
Sincerely,
Angee Silliman
Principal

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Parent Referral
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office. Completing this form gives our school TAG committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of its completion.
Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
REMINDER: All Parent Information Forms must be completed and returned to our school by November 2, 2016
Chehalem STEM Expo
The STEM Expo will be February 9. Each classroom will participate, however if you would like your child to complete their own project at home, they will need to fill out a Science Inquiry Exhibitor Entry Form, which is due October 28th. Please submit only one form per project for the STEM Expo. You may submit an entry online: https://goo.gl/p9ytrk
Entries will be reviewed by the STEM committee to ensure students are completing an inquiry project and have the support necessary to be successful. Sample ideas can be found at http://chehalemstem.weebly.com Please no demonstrations.
Nov. 28- Dec. 9 science boards will be available for pick up before or after school. Boards may not go home on the bus. Only students who fill out an entry form may pick up a board.
