Principal's Message...

February is "I Love to Read Moth" here at Sunnyside School! It's a month where schools all across the nation celebrate the joy of reading, and we have several fun reading events planned here at Sunnyside to celebrate literacy:

The Reading Train (2/1): Drop everything and read in the hallways, with Mr. Pagel as our Reading Conductor, who will visit each classroom with his conductor's hat and train whistle to invite them to join the Reading Train.

Reading Stations: Students can visit our themed stations during the month, bringing their own books to read, or choosing from the collection at each station:

  • Pete the Cat books
  • Splat the Cat books
  • Mo Willems books
  • Sports-themed books

Reading Cart: Classes can sign up in the library to have our travelling bookmobile visit your classroom for a day. The cart will be stocked with a wide variety of staff favorites!

Mystery Reader Video (2/8): Try to figure out who the mystery reader is in a video sent out to all teachers. The mystery reader will be revealed at the end of the day!

Optional Used Book Exchange (2/15): Your student may bring up to 5 gently used books to exchange for books that other students have brought. If you have more than 5 books to bring, they will be donated to students who do not have any books. Please make sure the books are:

  • Quality selections that other students would read.
  • Near the same interest level as books your students would like to get.

Character Reading Day (2/22): Teachers dress up and read a favorite children's book to different classes.

Read My Shirt Day (2/28): We will close the month off by wearing shirts/sweatshirts with text on them to practice our reading skills.

Author Visit (4/12): As an extension of "I Love to Read" Month, author Cori Doerrfeld will visit Sunnyside on April 12th.

Read on, Sunnysiders!!!

Sunnyside's New Playground!

Last January, Sunnyside kicked off fundraising to add additional playground equipment to our lower playground near the front of the school. While our current equipment meets the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), our goal was to add additional equipment for all students, with a poured surface friendlier to wheelchairs and walkers. Amazingly, just one year later, we have secured the funding necessary to construct a new playground during the summer of 2019! Thanks to a variety of grants, fundraisers, donations from local businesses and organizations, and in-kind work from the City of Red Wing, students at Sunnyside will have expanded playground options next fall. Thank you, Red Wing!

2019 - 2020 Incoming Kindergarten Registration

Registration for the 2019 - 2020 school year kicks off on Tuesday, January 29th from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at Sunnyside. If you have an incoming kindergarten student, please join us for some pizza, informational session, and a chance to complete district enrollment forms. Free childcare is provided!
