PreK News
Ms. Sherry Chambers
The Preschool class at West Lumberton studied winter and its seasonal changes. On January 11, each child brought in at least one piece of ice – large or small – which they had made by putting water in whatever shaped container they chose and then freezing it overnight. They could also choose to color it with food coloring. Once we had all the pieces of ice in various sizes, shapes and colors, we discussed how we could stick them together to make an ice sculpture. Some suggestions that were made and tried were: liquid glue, glue sticks, masking tape and scotch tape. When none of these worked, we tried salt. We could hear it cracking the ice, as it began to melt a little, and as we put one piece of ice on top of another, they began to stick together! When our sculpture was complete, we discussed what would happen to it by the end of the day. Then we put it aside to watch throughout the day, and as we predicted, it was almost completely melted by the time we went home. It was a great science experiment, one I believe the students will remember for many years to come!

Working Together We Will Succeed!
Mr. Zach’s Third Grade Dolphins are excited to be back in school after the holiday break and our snowcation. During the month of January, we worked diligently to review skills and concepts to tackle district benchmark assessments. In math, students continued to work together to master their multiplication facts and operational clue words to be able to tackle brain rattling two-step word problems. Likewise in Reading and Language Arts, students worked diligently within their groups to read and respond to informational texts. West Lumberton’s Third Grade Dolphins are off to an awesome beginning of the New Year and our goal is to dive deeper into standards mastery!

Congratulations to our 2/3rd Battle of the Books team for reading their assigned books and for participating in the competition. Our students worked hard to read and remember specific details from a total of 15 books. They should be commended on their performance! For many of the team members, this was their first time participating on the Battle of the Books team.
I would like to say thank you to Ms. June Hunt for working with our students, Ms. Samantha Townsend for assisting, Mr. Zach for cooperating with practice schedules, and to Ms. Gavaghan for sharing your space.

West Lumberton Elementary School
West Lumberton Elementary School was founded in 1952 as a community-based school. The school has experienced many changes since it opened in 1952.
Despite various challenges over the years, West Lumberton has received many awards and distinctions, including recognition as a PBIS Exemplar School for the past several years. The school is also celebrated for its reputation as one of the higher performing schools in the Public Schools of Robeson County. Currently, West Lumberton Elementary School has a school performance grade of a 'C.'
Unfortunately, our beautiful school was damaged as a result of flooding from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. We have been operating as a "school within a school" on the campus of Lumberton Jr. High since October of 2016. We miss our beautiful school, but we consider ourselves very fortunate to have been able to remain together through such a difficult time. In the face of such adversity, West Lumberton Elementary School staff, students, parents, and community have demonstrated not only the ability to survive, but everyone has rallied together to ensure that we continue to thrive. Through this experience, we have personified our mission statement of "Working together we will succeed!"
