SCHOOL NUTRITION NEWSLETTER

Message from the Director

When my grandson was very young, I told him that his birthday would always be on a holiday. This year he turns 11 on 11/11 and the holiday we celebrate is to honor our veterans. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day and celebrated the end of World War I on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" in 1918. In 1954, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day to help focus attention on the important purpose of honoring America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. When I think of our own U.S. Army veteran Pat Etherton, I am grateful for what she has given to this country and for what she continues to give to our program. Pat embodies the concept of sacrifice for the common good and gives up the comfort of her own position to travel to any school and fill in anytime and anywhere needed. Thank you, Pat, you are an inspiration to us all!

With gratitude,

Kathy

FROM THE MIND OF A MANAGER: Melissa Sabin

I am a firm believer in the power of positivity. Positivity increases our ability to think creatively, to progress, to cope with challenges and to work with others. Every day, I spend 5-10 minutes with my team for a morning pep talk. I go over what needs to happen that day, set priorities and explain who is going to do what. We go over any substitutions for the day and allergens. With proper planning and teamwork, potential complications can be reduced or eliminated before they arise. Work together, stay positive, and give it your best!

Administrative Review PREP: Access to Drinking Water

Federal regulation requires that schools must make potable (drinking) water available to children at no charge in the place where lunch is served during the meal service. In addition, when breakfast is served in the cafeteria, schools must make potable water available and accessible without restriction to children at no charge. Each Cafe Manager has a procedure for offering students water. Cups are placed by the cashier during breakfast and lunch so students can ask for one to take to a bottle filling station. While potable water is required to be made available to students, it is not considered part of the reimbursable meal and students are not required to take water. You must have a sign near the cashier that reminds students to ask for a cup if they would like water with their meal. This is proof of notification. Cafeteria aides must allow these students to fill their cup with water. This policy will be checked during the Administrative Review. Laminated signs will be in Managers' folders to display.

VHS Opens Express Lines

VHS Cafe launched an Express Line for students using their ID only, no pin pad. The line moves very quickly! Next week, Express Line 2 will open. Students can take a picture of their ID to keep on their phone and the scanner can still read the barcode.

Power Up Cafe coming to elementary schools!

The Power Up Cafe has landed at Flint Lake. The new sign compliments the freshly painted walls. Each elementary school will receive a customized sign to hang and elementary staff will receive T-shirts with the Power Up logo to wear on Fridays! Below, Natalie Peters (L) and Rachel Ho (R) show off Flint Lake's new sign.
