FCPS Family Perceptual Survey
FCPS launched a survey on Thursday, January 24 to gather your perceptions about your child's school. The survey will close Friday, February 22. Lewistown Elementary sent a letter home with each student explaining the survey. The letter includes a link for parents and guardians to access and complete an online survey. This link- https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FAM2001 is specific to LES. A limited number of paper copies of the survey will also be available in the front office. Parent/guardian feedback is important to FCPS and the staff at Lewistown as we continue our work building on strengths and striving to make improvements as a partner in your child’s education. Please contact our front office if you have any questions about the survey. Thank you!

Counselor News
Our school will be participating in the “Random Acts of Kindness Week” during the week of February 18-22. The mission of this challenge is to spread kindness throughout our school, homes, and communities. Counseling lessons on the subject of kindness will be taught throughout all grades this month. I challenge all students to complete the random acts of kindness board they received. If students complete at least 8 acts of kindness, sign those completed and return the board at the end of the month. BE SURE YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME ARE ON THE BOARD! If you choose to complete something that is not listed, simply cross out an idea and fill in your own. Students can return the signed sheet in exchange for a special blue kindness coupon worth 20 tickets! We will begin our challenge with the introduction of a special LES mission. Later in the month, we will dress for kindness, continue our penny collection for Pennies for Patients, decorate a rock for our “Kindness Garden” and write Hospice Hug Notes for Hospice patients and their families. Have fun and show your kindness!
“Pennies for Patients” has begun! Many students have shared that they are collecting pennies, nickels, quarters, and dimes in their individual collection boxes at home. Students can then bring their boxes of coins to school and place them in the larger classroom collection boxes. The last day to collect coins will be February 22nd. The class who collects the most money will earn a popcorn party!!! All donations will go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help those dealing with b

TeamLES Homework News REMINDER
Reading builds brains, fostering early learning and creating connections in the brain that promote language, cognitive, and social and emotional development. While there is no solid evidence that homework is beneficial for academic success in younger kids, there is plenty of evidence that reading is.
Some Tips for Parents:
1. Students can read what is provided in their book bags, what they bring home from the media center or what you have available at home.
2. Let them reread the same books. Rereading helps build fluency. Over time, you'll notice that your child will stop less often to decode words.
3. Take turns reading. By listening to your reading, your child will hear what good readers sound like. After you've read a part, ask your child to reread the same section. This provides a chance for him/her to read with expression.
4. Do what is best for your family. Perhaps the 15 minute reading happens before bedtime or over the weekend when there is more time. We are just asking that students log 60 reading minutes a week at home. Our goal is to make reading a daily habit and a lifelong love.

WATCHDOGS
We would like to send a huge THANK YOU to all the gentlemen who came out for our very first Watch D.O.G.S. Pizza Night Kick Off! We hope you enjoyed having dinner with your children and learning about this exciting program.
Our mission is simple...since 1998 WATCH D.O.G.S. has brought hundreds of thousands of fathers, grandfathers and father-figures into the classrooms and hallways of their children’s schools, with two primary program goals:
- To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
- To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
If you were unable to attend but are interested in learning how YOU can become a Watch D.O.G connect with us by emailing Lesptawatchdogs@gmail.com or check out the Watch D.O.G.S. Website atwww.dadsofgreatstudents.com!
Your PTA is holding a lottery fundraiser for the month of April. During each day in April a $50 prize (in cash, gift certificates or product) will be awarded to the person with the ticket matching the Maryland Evening Pick 3 Lottery Number. A winner is chosen every day! If no one has the matching number ticket a consolation prize will be awarded to another number chosen at random.
To make this fundraiser successful, we need to sell 1000 tickets. The tickets will be $5 each. We are asking each family to sell at least 7 tickets or make a $25 donation. Think of anyone who might like 30 chances to win $50 worth in prizes. You can sell tickets to family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers.
Your family will receive an order form. Please return it to school by Wednesday, March 13th. A member of the PTA Fundraiser Committee will contact you.
Attending a School Outside Your Attendance Area
Dates for applying to attend a school outside the usual attendance area are January 2-March 1. Schools projected to be over capacity in the coming school year are closed to out-of-district students. FCPS will post the list of restricted schools online in December.
