Sipley School Weekly Howl

Week of May 4, 2015

At Sipley, let's dwell on what student can do more than what they can't do.

Staff Appreciation Week

Those who enter the field of education choose this profession as a way of helping children develop into caring and nurturing members of society. Each of you give up so much of yourself to do this important work. Behind the scenes you collaborate with colleagues to sharpen your skills, you attend professional development sessions and read to learn, you demonstrate patience during challenging moments, you share your love with all those in your class, and at times, you use your own money to pay for items in your class or for your students. "To the world, you are just a teacher. But to your students, you are a hero." You are remarkable individuals. I appreciate the work that you do each day. Enjoy this week where we pause to celebrate you! Thanks for all that you do for the wonderful students of John L. Sipley School.

The Leader in Me

As I read The Leader in Me, I will share a few points that you may want to incorporate into your already talent-filled bag of tricks.

1. Greet students at the door each morning, along with a student greeter. Shake hands with students as you look them in the eye, calling each student by name, and adding something nice about the student or something positive about the day.

2. Try to bookend leadership moments at the start and finish of each day as a way of talking about how things went that day, what goals you want to achieve that day, complimenting positive leadership behaviors that were spotted during the day, and so forth.

PLC Meetings - TAs Included

I will lead PLC meetings this week. This time will be devoted to the beginnings of "The Sipley Way" as we develop a common understanding of who WE are, what WE are about, and why WE do our work in the manner WE do it. WE are going to build a sustainable culture.

We will meet in our PLC to gain an overview of this collaborative work ahead. I will ask staff to develop a mental image of the ideal culture of a school, what would that culture look like, sound like, feel like?

I would like teaching assistants to join their grade level teaching partner in their PLC.
