October 17-23 2021
Good morning Cannon families,
We had the honor and privilege to welcome Mr. Ashton Smith Friday at Cannon! Thank you, Selah Stull, for interviewing our celebrity guest! Ashton Smith is an American voice actor who has recorded voice-overs for many movie trailers, television commercials, and network promotions. It just so happens that Mr. Smith is also the brother of our fabulous GT LEAD Teacher, Melanie Gable! We were thrilled to learn from him Friday! Mr. Smith took the opportunity to help us gain excitement for our upcoming STEMapalooza - check it out!
Proud to be your principal,
Tina Garrett

We are gearing up for our first annual STEMapalooza! Our Fall into STEM STEMapalooza will be a school day filled with fall themed STEM Design Challenges and team building opportunities for all our Cubs. Your scholar will participate in STEM challenges, plant Tulips in our garden for Red Ribbon Week, play games, and so much more. In partnership with our PTA, we will also have several opportunities for Cubs to participate in ‘extra’ activities during the day. There will be four different wristband options to participate in the "extra" Fall Fun! Make sure to be on the lookout! You will return order forms, with exact cash or check made payable to Cannon PTA, to your homeroom teacher.
During the school day, our STEMapalooza will be filled with STEM design challenges (shown below) for all students which will take place during the bulk of the day. The cost is linked to "extras" such as hair color, dunk tank, boo bags. The "extras" will be a block of time for approximately 45 minutes staggered by grade level.
We need several volunteers to help during the day, please sign up here:

Lunch Visitors ~
Per the recent GCISD guidelines (still listed below) for visitors and volunteers, we may allow lunch visitors beginning Sept. 7th. We have made accommodations at Cannon to have lunch visitors eat with their Cub spread out in the cafe on the booth side, which allows guests to socially distance and can accommodate up to 6 families per grade level lunch. Families will only be permitted to eat with their Cub (Sorry, no friends). Thank you for cleaning up and throwing away trash after your family lunch!
Lunch guests will still sign-in through our secure vestibule, complete the COVID screening, and meet their Cannon Cub at the entrance to the cafeteria before proceeding to the booth table area for lunch. We will post the next month of lunches to sign-up for around the beginning of each month here in The Cannon Connection and it will remain linked in the lunch section at the bottom for the remainder of the month. We ask that you please be courteous to the rest of the community and limit lunch visits with your child to no more than one per month so that all families have the opportunity to visit. We appreciate your cooperation. Each family needs only 1 slot reserved. For example, Mom, Dad, and sister may all come eat lunch with their Cub. Only Mom needs to be registered as 1 visitor to reserve 1 booth together. When it asks for quantity of visitors, please select just 1. You may bring whomever you want on the day you check-in at the school office to sit at your family booth. Please understand we are unable to accept walk in lunch visitors.
All lunch visitors must sign up - You may sign up for October lunches HERE.
GCISD Holiday Greeting Card Contest
All elementary, middle, and high school students are invited to submit original artwork for the cover of GCISD’s official holiday greeting card. This year’s theme is "A Season of Kindness.” Three student designs—one each from the elementary, middle, and high school levels—will be selected and sent out on behalf of the GCISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Robin Ryan.
The three students whose works are selected for the GCISD Holiday Greeting Card will receive $25 and recognition at the December meeting of the Board of Trustees. The selected artwork will be featured on the district’s website and used in district publicity.
Cannon campus submissions are due on or before Friday November 5 to Ms. Garrett.
Complete rules and guidelines can be found on this flyer.
GCISD College and Career Night
GCISD will host its annual College and Career Night on Tuesday, November 2, at 7 p.m. at Grapevine High School. All GCISD students and families are invited to this event that is organized by GHS and CHHS counselors and GoCenters. Over 120 universities, junior/community colleges, technical schools, military schools and military recruiters will be on hand to answer questions. There will also be an opportunity to ask FAFSA questions and complete the application. For more information, check out the flyer or contact your counselor.
GCISD COVID-19 Resources
Please visit www.GCISD.net/COVID19 for lots of resources from the District pertaining to COVID-19. There you can find updated frequently asked questions, current GCISD COVID-19 protocols, information on the GCISD COVID-19 Testing Center, information on remote conferencing, statistics regarding COVID-19 cases in GCISD and more.
Remote Conferencing
Beginning on Monday, August 23, remote conferencing will be available for students who are unable to attend school in-person because they are in quarantine as the result of being a close contact or test-positive for COVID-19.
Approved by the Texas Education Agency, remote conferencing is a mechanism by which online instruction can be provided for those who are temporarily away from campus for reasons related to COVID-19. It is important to remember this is not GCISD Online, a temporary remote learning option for elementary students that families were made aware of last week.
Please click here for frequently asked questions regarding remote conferencing. More detailed information, including a complete list of FAQs, is available from the TEA by clicking here.

Cafeteria Volunteers
The GCISD Nutrition Services Department is still looking for volunteers! Come get to know the students while serving them a nutritious lunch in the school cafeteria. You can volunteer at your child's school or any school in the district. You must be registered as a volunteer in the district, or get signed up as a volunteer today so you can join the amazing kitchen staff serving the students. Please see the flyer for details and a link to sign up!

Reflections Art Competition is Back
We’re excited to launch the PTA’s annual arts contest, Reflections!
The theme for 2021-2022 is:
“I will Change the World By…”
For those new to Cannon, the Reflections program is a wonderful opportunity for students to be recognized and gain access to the arts. Students K-12 create and submit original artwork in one (or all!) of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts. Cannon winners have the opportunity to move up through GCISD, regional and the TX PTA’s programs to compete at the national level.
Submissions are due in person or virtual by November 5, 2020.
