Report Card Newsletter, January 2017
Happy New Year, Elm Street Families!
2017 is here and our students and teachers are rocking and rolling with learning! A renewed energy fills the halls and writings about resolutions cover the walls. It's an exciting time as students and staff set goals for second semester and begin striving to achieve them! Thank you, parents and families, for being our partners in learning. If you have questions or concerns about your child's achievement, please reach to his or her teacher. We will always make time to talk with you about your child's progress.

Perseverance - To not give up if something is difficult; to "hang in there" and keep trying even if you make mistakes
Speaking of Perseverance... 4th Grade Meets MLB's Will Smith
During his visit at Elm Street, he shared "I had a dream and I never gave up on it." He shared examples of his perseverance and told students he would practice at home in the mirror for hours, working on his form, after he had already spent time practicing with the coach. Smith told students, "When I got the call to go to the Major League, I called my mom and my sister, and I just cried for a while. It's okay for boys to cry."
Smith showed students the value of a growth mindset by explaining that he wasn't the best at the sport growing up. But, he liked playing so he went to the ball field to practice and play. He became better at the sport through hard work, practice, and listening to the direction of coaches. Now he's a major league ball player!
Here's Smith's stat page on ESPN:

It was a privilege to hear about his hard work and the difference it made in his life as a professional athlete. Thanks for spending a little time at Elm Street, Mr. Smith!
