Perseverance - To not give up if something is difficult; to "hang in there" and keep trying even if you make mistakes

Speaking of Perseverance... 4th Grade Meets MLB's Will Smith

Fourth grade students recently had the honor of meeting Will Smith, Relief Pitcher of Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants. Smith talked about the role perseverance played in his move to the majors.

During his visit at Elm Street, he shared "I had a dream and I never gave up on it." He shared examples of his perseverance and told students he would practice at home in the mirror for hours, working on his form, after he had already spent time practicing with the coach. Smith told students, "When I got the call to go to the Major League, I called my mom and my sister, and I just cried for a while. It's okay for boys to cry."

Smith showed students the value of a growth mindset by explaining that he wasn't the best at the sport growing up. But, he liked playing so he went to the ball field to practice and play. He became better at the sport through hard work, practice, and listening to the direction of coaches. Now he's a major league ball player!

Here's Smith's stat page on ESPN:

It was a privilege to hear about his hard work and the difference it made in his life as a professional athlete. Thanks for spending a little time at Elm Street, Mr. Smith!

Academic Team Prepared for First Meet

Elm Street's Academic Team is primed and ready for the first meet. The team is heading to Whitesburg Elementary this afternoon for its first official meet of the season. We look forward to watching our students compete with energy, good sportsmanship, and correct answers! Team members have experienced success during their practices leading up to today's competition. It has been exciting to see team members dressed in uniform across campus today, opening car doors during safety patrol duty and working hard in classes. We are ready to take on our opponents during this afternoon's meet!

Student Attendance Awards - Monthly Winners

As you know, Elm Street is working hard to promote strong student attendance. Our attendance mantra is 'healthy attendance is key.' With students attending school every day, all day when they are healthy, optimal learning and growth can occur. We know that illness sometimes strikes and we want to protect the health of all students and staff by encouraging attendance each and every day a student or staff member is healthy for school!

November/December Highest Attendance Winners

Kindergarten: Ms. Andrea's Blue Bugs

First Grade: Ms. Copeland

Second Grade: Ms. Stephens

Third Grade: Ms. Sambdman

Science Olympiad Practice Continues
