The history of the Green Sea Turtle
Are green sea turtles land or water creatures? Well there actually both, they started out about on land but over 150 years they have slowly moved to the waters. The green sea turtle was one of the few creatures that have seen dinosaurs evolve, and become extinct. Turtles were first thought to have appeared during the triassic period about 208-245 million years ago.
Endangered
Green sea turtles are listed to be an endangered species and a part of the population is listed as critically endangered in the Medditerranen.
Habitat
Green sea turtles are found in shallow, coastal waters, bays, lagoons, and estuaries, but can also venture into the open waters.
Reproduction
Sexual maturity for a turtle can range from 3 untill 13 years. Mating can occur on land or in water. A few days after mating the female will lay eggs on the land which takes several hours. The female can lay up to 9 sets of eggs every mating seasons and mates every 2-5 years.
