Linwood Howe’s Lunar New Year celebration is on Tuesday, February 13th @ 9AM
Linwood Howe’s Lunar New Year celebration is on Tuesday, February 13th @ 9AM That means it's time for the Dragon Parade! Families are welcome to join the field at 9AM!
Families will enter and exit the field through Gate #2 on Irving.
Weeks ago, nearly every student decorated their own paper dragon scale. Each scale has been attached to a 100 ft long hand-crafted dragon designed by parent Irene Yu. (Thank you, Irene!) This year's dragon is named Betty. Betty will be joined by last year's dragon, Joan. On Tuesday morning, students will report to classrooms for attendance and then move to the field.
The celebration includes a parade of nations that celebrate Lunar New Year and a fifth grade dragon procession around the field. We have exciting news this year. The Los Angeles Flying Dragon Lion Dance Association will perform a lion dance after the dragon procession and talk to students about the cultural significance of Lunar New Year and the lion dance.
Countries that celebrate Lunar New Year include China (Chūnjié), the Koreas (Seollal), Vietnam (Tết), Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and others. 2024 is the year of the Wood Dragon. In the Lion Dance, dancers wear a mythical lion costume and incorporate martial arts movement to mimic a lion. The dance is accompanied by live percussions. The lion dance is believed to bring good luck for the new year.
The lion dance performance is co-sponsored by the Lin Howe AAPI Parents Affinity Group and the PTA's Diversity and Equity team.

Thank you,
Dear Families,
We are the founders of Mack and Mowgli Project, a nonprofit we started in 2015 that works directly with the LA animal shelters. We did a presentation for some of the 3rd grade and 5th classes this week about coming together for a donation drive and want to provide some information for the parents!
The LA animal shelters are overcrowded, extremely under- funded and under-staffed. Due to the lack of resources, employees and volunteers, the shelter animals are spending weeks at a time (sometimes longer) without coming out of their kennel for a single walk or play time, and most often do not have a blanket or toy in their kennel. We started our nonprofit to provide enrichment for the animals during their stay, as it is a very stressful and lonely environment, and where they are often already coming from a difficult past and will be spending months and months inside the shelter.
We run donation drives with local companies and schools, collecting NEW or USED items for pets and then bring the donations to the shelters.
The kids were very excited to get involved and help the dogs, cats and other shelter animals that are waiting to go to their FURever home!!
Please see the list of items you can send to school to donate and please feel free to email us with any questions. You can check out our website and instagram for more info.
