Union Adult Learning Center

June 2021

And just like that, we reached the end of the 2020-2021 school year. When this year began, we had no idea what to expect. We wanted to get back to normal as quickly as possible. But this year had some additional twists and turns that we could not have predicted. We were unable to return to in-person classes until second semester, but plan to open up again as we are able to do so safely. It is interesting to see which pieces of how we had to operate this year will become the new normal. Our online enrollment will continue for the foreseeable future. Our next enrollment will take place in August.

Dr. Susan Hartzler

Our fearless leader is retiring at the end of this school year. She has been our program director for 5 years. We would like to take this time to celebrate the amazing job she has done overhauling our program. Here are some of the things her staff shared about her:

"I love how Susan trusts her teachers to get the job done without looking over their shoulders. She treats us like professionals and respects our time and opinions. She asks for our feedback. She treats us like the experts that we are. I've always appreciated that about Susan."

"I appreciate that Susan seeks out input from the team and values our opinions."

"Susan really comes through for working moms, because she has been one! She understands we have one foot at work and one foot at home with children and she is flexible with our needs. She doesn't look down on moms but praises them for their hard work. She has always been understanding of our needs."

"You will be greatly missed Susan! Thank you for your excellence. "

Dr. Amy McCready

Dr. Amy McCready is in her 28th year in public education and 15th with Union Public Schools. She received her Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. She received her Master’s in Education with an emphasis in Sports Management from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS and her Administrative Certification from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. McCready completed her Ed.D. at Oklahoma State University in Tulsa in 2020. While at Union, McCready has served as Director of Union’s spirit programs, Assistant Principal at the Intermediate High School, and Assistant Principal at the Alternative School. She has also been the Principal of the ASPIRE Program in addition to serving as the Assistant Director of the Adult Learning Center and Assistant Director of Union Virtual. In 2021, she was named the Director of the Adult Learning Center.

We are excited to move forward with Amy in the lead.
