Welcome Back to Manning!

August 3rd, 2018

Our Vision

The vision of The Manning School of Academics and Arts is to challenge all students to work to their highest potential and encourage student responsibility as they develop intellectually, socially, physically, emotionally and creatively.

Dear Manning Families,

It is with tremendous gratitude and excitement that I welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year. I want to take a moment to introduce myself to you. I am the Principal, Jeena Templeton. For many of you, that’s a new name, not because I am a different person, but because I was lucky enough to recently marry my best friend. He and I are both school administrators and busy parents who feel a little bit like glorified chauffeurs for our active kids. I started my career in education at Central High School in Grand Junction, where I served a diverse population of students. I taught English Language Arts, coordinated the Service Learning program, served as Head Coach of Cross Country and Speech and Debate, conducted the show choir, and coordinated the AP Program. Through these varied roles, I found my voice and passion for advocating for kids and creating experiences that helped them grow as learners, athletes and people. In 2014, I was recruited into the district office’s administrative ranks as Secondary Induction Coordinator, where I was tasked with providing professional development and mentorship to all secondary teachers new to District 51. I left that position and my childhood home town with a heavy heart to pursue my ultimate dream: to become a building principal. For two years, I led Riverside Middle School and faced the challenge of galvanizing a dedicated, talented staff toward meeting its vision of rigorous, joy-filled learning for all students, and last year, I was lucky enough to serve the staff, students and families of The Manning School. We worked hard to thoughtfully transition from 7-8 Junior High School into a 6-8 Middle School primed to encourage academic, creative and social-emotional growth and health for our incredible students. Our focus this year as a staff will be to collaborate and learn from one-another; it has become evident through my year of conversation and learning from Manning’s extraordinary professionals that the expertise to craft learning experiences that engage your kids in rigorous academic challenges and critical thinking and creative problem solving lives right here inside this building. We are excited to wield it and focus our talents into making the best, most vibrant school possible for our remarkable students.

Before my life in education, I was a music theatre major at NYU -- who played Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Eponine in Les Miserables, and Cinderella in Cinderella, to name some favorites, and on my free time, I still sing with the Grand Junction Rockestra-- a 30 piece symphonic orchestra, that plays classic and contemporary rock music. I love to run and dance and write and whitewater raft and read and cook and learn-- so much so that I have started my pursuit of my doctorate at the University of Denver this summer-- but at the end of the day, my most important titles are “Wife” and “Mom.” As such, one of my goals this year is to encourage and model balance with the dedicated and determined people I work with. I have set as an expectation that all of us avoid our emails and voicemails starting at 6:30 every evening and throughout the weekend. I hope you will understand that we are making time for our families and will respond to your concerns and questions the following business day.

I feel truly lucky to work with and learn from the truly exceptional staff at Manning, and we cannot wait to get to know you and your kids. All of us are committed to upholding Manning’s rich traditions of high expectations, rigorous college-preparatory academics and strong school-to-family partnerships, all in an effort to provide a school experience worthy of our students and community. If you have any questions. concerns, ideas, or just want to say hello, please don’t hesitate to call (303)982.6288, email (Jeena.Templeton@jeffco.k12.co.us) or just drop in. I welcome the conversation!

Thank you for sharing your kids with us; it is our honor to serve them.

Meet our 2018-19 Front Office Staff

David Luongo - Assistant Principal

David Luongo will be joining us this school year from Soroco MS/HS, which is half an hour south of Steamboat Springs. David has been the assistant principal at Soroco for three years and the athletic director for two years. Prior to becoming an administrator, David taught math and science in DPS for seven years, while coaching baseball, softball, and cycling. He enjoys spending as much time as possible in the great outdoors. David is a former college baseball player at Johns Hopkins University and found the beautiful state of Colorado while riding his bicycle across America. Accompanying David in his transition back to the front range will be his wife, Meghan, two-year-old daughter Kinley, two dogs, and a cat. The whole family is excited about this opportunity to join the Manning team!

Amanda Pouliot - Instructional Coach

As a proud parent of three Manning alums, I am excited to join the wonderful Manning community in a new capacity this year and will be serving as instructional coach and French teacher. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of teaching everything from kindergarten to 8th grade but middle school has always been my favorite. I love the energy, humor and insightfulness of middle school students. My husband, Steve, and I have four children ranging in age from 16 to 7, so much of our time is spent as taxi transport to various activities and cheering them on. As a family, we like to camp, hike, play sports, make music and watch movies. This summer we have had a blast being in the musical The Wizard of Oz together. I look forward to working with your families and students this year.

Shannon Haas - Principal Secretary

Hello my name is Shannon Haas. I am entering my 11th year with Jeffco School District. I have been with Manning for 7 years. I volunteered with PTA while raising my kids which grew into a love for kids and working for the school system and as a wonderful bonus, I have some time off to spend with my family. I have been married for 29 years and have two daughters. My daughter, Lindsay is 26 years of age and works as an ICU nurse. My second daughter, Emily is 22 years of age and works as a Commercial Interior Designer. I enjoy being on the water in the summer and skiing in the winter. I love taking in a Broncos game, playing Bunko with my friends and enjoy seeking out new restaurants. I am a native to Colorado and would never live anywhere else.

Jade Zentz - Financial Secretary

My name is Jade Zentz and I was born and raised in Arvada, and currently reside in Arvada today. My kiddo, Beau, is a 1st grader over at Prospect Valley this year. I have worked several different positions in customer service and love working and interacting with people. I am a part time Realtor in my off time from Manning and this is my 1st year as a Financial Secretary. I enjoy anything outdoors, especially camping and fishing with my son and my family. I have developed a big soft spot for middle schoolers and all the personality they bring! I can't wait to see what this year brings.

Melaine Heesacker - Registrar

My name is Melaine Heesacker. I was born and raised in the Arvada area. After moving several times in our first years of marriage for work, my husband of almost 19 years, and I returned to the area to raise our kids here in Jeffco. I have two high school aged kids, a husband and a dog. In my past life, I taught special needs pre-school and worked in the Speech-language arena. I changed gears and decided that working as a secretary serving the needs of a school was my best fit. I enjoy working with kids, both at school and in my side gig as a Scout Leader. I love to camp and jeep as often as my time will allow. Travel is my favorite hobby. I believe people should travel as much as their means will allow, even if it isn’t far from home, experiencing new places is good for the soul!

Bertha Heesacker - Clinic Aide

My name is Bertha Heesacker. I am a Colorado native, originally from a family farm in Northern Colorado. I have 2 grown boys who have families of their own, complete with my 4 grandchildren. I have worked in schools for over 30 years, most of which I was the kitchen manager for a small Catholic school. I enjoy being outside, gardening, jeeping and camping with my family. One Book, One Manning

This year's "One Book, One Manning" is Hidden Figures (Young Readers' Edition) by Margot Lee Shetterly. Every year we select a book to read together as a community- not as part of any class or curriculum, but to bring us together around a shared text. Now a major motion picture, this book tells the powerful story of four African-American female mathematicians at NASA who helped achieve some of the greatest moments in our space program. We encourage you and your Manning student to read this book together.
