Liberty Creek Trail Guide
February 5th, 2024
Liberty Creek Families,
I hope this letter finds you well. As we reflect on the busy month of January, I am pleased to share some highlights of our recent efforts and achievements at school.
Throughout January, our dedicated teachers engaged in a thorough reassessment of our students, analyzing their growth over the course of the school year. The collaborative efforts of our teaching staff were focused on tailoring small-group instruction to meet the individual needs of each student. Professional development sessions were also held, with a particular emphasis on phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency – laying a solid foundation for reading. Our commitment to staying at the forefront of educational research has led us to center much of our work around the Science of Reading.
Parents often inquire about ways to support their children in developing strong reading skills at home. To that end, we encourage you to have your child read for 15-20 minutes nightly and utilizing Lexia, an adaptive learning tool. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of parents reading to their children, as this shared activity fosters a love for literature and enhances language skills.
Looking ahead to February, we are excited to kick things into high gear with a multitude of engaging events scheduled throughout the month. We believe these activities will contribute to a positive and enriching learning experience for our students.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in the education of your children. We look forward to a fantastic month ahead!
Best regards,
Alisha Alsaker
Attendance
We are committed to ensuring that all students fully benefit from their education by attending school regularly. Student attendance is an essential first step for students to learn. We are committed to supporting your student’s ability to attend and access their education. Your student’s future and well-being is our first priority, and we want to partner with you to ensure their success. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions!
DID YOU KNOW?
- By being present at school, your child learns valuable social skills and has the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with other students and school staff.
- Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with schoolwork, or dealing with social issues.
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences (excused and unexcused) can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10 percent (just two days a month or about 18 days in a year) increases the chance that your student will not read or master math at the same level as their peers.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
- Set and track an attendance goal for the rest of the year. You can use the picture below.
- Have a regular bed time routine and make sure your students get over 9 hours of sleep each night.
- Lay out clothes and backpacks the night before.
- If possible, avoid scheduling trips and appointments during school time.
- Follow our district and state health guidelines on when to keep your child home due to illness. If you have any questions, please contact our school nurse at 509-558-6300.
- Encourage meaningful afterschool activities, including sports and clubs.
District Cell Phone Policy (this includes iWatches)
We've observed a recent increase in the use of electronic devices, particularly on the playground and in the classroom. While we appreciate the role technology plays in our lives, we've noticed that it can sometimes be a distraction during instructional time.
To ensure a focused learning environment, we kindly request that students place their cellphones and electronic devices (iWatches) in their backpacks and have them turned off during school hours. We understand the importance of staying connected, and should you need to deliver a message to your child, please feel free to call our front office.
We truly appreciate your understanding and support in this matter. Our aim is not to limit the use of technology but rather to guide our students on how to use it appropriately. By working together, we can create a balanced and conducive learning environment for all.
