Walker's News and Notes
I want to thank you for leading your class this week. I know there is a lot of questions from both you and our community. Yes, schools are closed until May 15th, but we will get through this.. I know there is a lot of uncertainty, focus on what you can control. You can control your response, emotions, thoughts and how you lead your class. Focus on your kids and your health, we will figure out the rest together.
Shout Outs
- Thank you staff for the transition to eLearning. I know it has not been smooth, but you have given our students stability during a difficult time.
- Thank you Special Education Team for reaching out to parents and scheduling the IEP Meetings. Each of you are making a difference.
Thursday would have been Nisa's Teacher of the Year Banquet. Although the banquet was cancelled, we celebrate her accomplishment.
- I cannot say enough about our Food Service and Custodial Staff.
- Thank you Resource Team for your check-ins and support.
Math Updates:
How does it feel to have the first official week done?? Thank you for making math fun and interactive. We know that eLearning has it's challenges, but you are making it work! Please let us know how we can support you and your students!
Reading Updates:
Thank you to all the teachers who have invited us to their Google Meets this week. We really enjoyed seeing the students (and you!) Please remember to take a look at the grading recommendations and guidelines on Blackboard. Also, use the Curriculum Expectations Document to address any questions about the literacy elearning block. Please also make sure to use the approved resources when supporting parents. Here are some ideas for how to use Google Meets for Literacy, but feel free to use this time to personalize and differentiate the content in other ways as well.
- Provide a chat room for students to ask questions about the response activities before completion
- Add an additional scaffold (i.e. graphic organizer) to support students with completing work
- Differentiate the number of questions assigned (making sure not to delete the gradeable opportunity)
- Use the IRA Outline in the Teacher Planning folder to scaffold and extend questions posed in IRA
- Suggest alternative ways for students to share their learning including a screenshot, sharing a picture on the phone to Google Classroom, and using the Voice Typing Tool. Directions are found in the Google Drive at each grade level
Thank you for everything you are doing during this crazy time! Let us know how we can help you
Social & Emotional Updates:
This was a hard week with new curriculum and different expectations. I know that you are worried about those students who aren't connected. Please let us focus on getting them connected and celebrate all those students you have seen. Please remember that a big part of this is connection. It is really important for you to take the time to continue building connections with and between your students. They need to know you care about them, then they will maintain connections and take risks with assignments. I really miss you and hope this week I will be able to stop into more classrooms. Thanks for all you do.
