After-School Chorus Video

The Chorus of Westerly offered a 10-week after school chorus program for any student interested in 3rd or 4th grade. Linked below is a 4-minute video compilation of some of their work. Andrew Howell from The Chorus of Westerly was quite impressed with the students who participated. I think you will be too when you watch the video.

BMX Assembly

Kids were quite entertained at today's BMX assembly. Thank you to the PTO for organizing this event for our students. The professional rider showed off his biking skills but also had great messages for the children around kindness, perseverance, respect, etc. Here are some pictures from the event. Not to worry everyone, both Mr. Fanning and Mr. G survived the bunny hop (as I used to call it back in my day). During the second show, Mrs. Abbott bravely volunteered and she made it through as well. The children loved that part of the show. :-)

Therapy Dog Visit

On Wednesday, we had a therapy dog (Penny) come to Hope Valley School and visit with grades 3 and 4 and a couple of PreK classes. Today we had another opportunity for service dogs to visit the school. The dogs were from Guiding Eyes for the Blind and the owners came to educate our K-2 students about the role of being a service dog.

This initiative was started by the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) led by Superintendent Picard. The committee is made up of 4th -12th grade students. Hope Valley School has 2 fourth grade students who are part of that committee. In a recent SAC meeting, students advocated for therapy dogs to visit our schools. Thank you Emily and Emma for serving on this committee and making this a reality.See picture below.

Kindness & Manners

Before April break, we started having 4th grade students use the intercom to say the Pledge of Allegiance and School Pledge. This week we had some 3rd graders join in on the fun. There is also a weekly kindness challenge along with interesting facts about kindness or the school or community.

Kindness Challenges to date:

Week 5: Ask a friend or staff member how their day is going

Week 4: A smile goes a long way

Week 3: Introduce yourself to someone new

Week 2: Fill someone's bucket and give a compliment

Week 1: Use good manners to say thank you and please

For those families that do not know, our school pledge is the following:

“I pledge to myself that I will do my best in all I do today. I will follow the school rules. I will work to the best of my ability and I will treat others with kindness and respect.”

Covid Protocols- Household Contacts

Asymptomatic household contacts regardless of vaccination status can return to school as long as they agree to test on the day of return and up through day 5 (if over a weekend for day 5, the student will test upon return).

It is important to understand that if the student has any single symptom they will be sent home and will be unable to return to school unless there is consent to have an antigen test completed at school when symptom-free or the family completes two home tests that are 48 hours apart from symptom onset. If any of these conditions are not met the student will follow the current RIDOH guidelines for quarantining and returning to school, which states, Household members who are not vaccinated and who do not consent to have antigen testing completed must quarantine while the infected household individual is in isolation, then start their 5-day quarantine.”

Mask wearing will be recommended for household contacts for 10 days from the date of exposure.

Antigen Testing

Families have the opportunity to get your child COVID-19 tested using the antigen (or rapid) test at school if your child develops symptoms. This is NOT part of our weekly PCR testing. Therefore, if a child is already in the weekly PCR testing, you will also need to complete this form for antigen testing. What is great about this option is that we get the results within 15 minutes.

We have transitioned to electronic registrations. Paper copies are available upon request. If you have any questions please contact Kerri Fisher at Kerri.Fisher@chariho.k12.ri.us or call 401-364-3260.

**For New Chariho Kindergarten Students NOT in a Chariho Preschool program**

For any new student registering for Kindergarten and is NOT in a Chariho PreK program, you will pre-register online HERE. If you have any questions (401-539-2321).

**For students currently enrolled in the Chariho Preschool program**

Specific to Chariho PreK families ONLY, parents will need to log into your Parent PowerSchool at PowerSchool Public Portal and complete the form called Intent to attend Kindergarten in Chariho. For step-by-step directions on how to do this, please see Chariho Preschool Parents.pdf directly below. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact central registration at 401-364-3260 or send an email at Kerri.Fisher@chariho.k12.ri.us. You can also call Donna Sunderland if you need help logging into PowerSchool at 401-539-2321.

Important Reminders

Invitations - We can once again hand out invitations to celebrations. As a reminder, if invitations go out they MUST go out to all students in the classroom.

Students Late to School - If you are bringing your child to school late, the expectation is that you come to the front door of the school to sign your child in. For safety reasons, please do not leave your child at the school to walk to the front door by themselves.

Absences - If your child is going to be absent, please call the school office at 401-539-2321. If your child happens to test positive for COVID, PLEASE be sure to email Nurse Tara, Ms. Donna, and Mr. G with that information.

Student Devices - Students in grades 1-4 have devices that MUST go back and forth to and from school everyday. Please ensure your child has his/her charged chromebook on a daily basis.

Snow/DL Day Information - Devices will need to be used if there is a snow day. Please see information regarding DL days for inclement weather days here. The emergency plan used as last resort is linked here as well. In case of a DL day I will be sure to inform parents like I did for the Jan 7th DL day.

Dismissal - Parent pick up for students in K-4 are arriving while prek dismissal is happening. PLEASE be mindful of our pre-school population and do not arrive prior to 3:10. The entire dismissal process for K-4 takes roughly 10-12 min. We have some amazing staff getting our students out quickly and safely.

Peanut & Tree Nut Free School - We continue to be a nut free school which means no peanut butter and no tree nuts including Nutella.

TOYS - Please make sure that your children do not take any toys from home to school. We continue to see an uptick in this and it is causing problems at school.

Identification - PLEASE be sure parents who are picking up children early from school have proper identification with them when they come to the front door. Ms. Donna is not always the one in the office and we must verify who is picking up the children. Thank you for your undivided attention to this request.

Parking at HVES - The parking spots that are numbered in the school lot are for staff ONLY. We are having issues with parents dropping off children in the morning and taking up a staff parking spot which is causing staff members to be late which is becoming problematic. Also, some staff end up getting blocked since we have double parking at the end of the day. If parents need to come to the building, PLEASE either park in front of the school or at Langworthy Field and walk up the stairs to the main front door.
