Principal's Message
As we turn the calendar page to June, I am reminded of where we were one year ago. We were ending the most unusual school year ever, saying farewell for the summer in strange new ways, and trying to plan for the 2020-2021 school year amid incredible uncertainty.
I somewhat expected that when the school year began on August 24, we would complete a week or two in person, only to have to return to fully remote learning. Yet, we worked throughout the summer to plan for our simultaneous learning model, offering both in person and distance learning options and putting in place a slate of COVID protocols to keep everyone safe in our building, and we not only made it past that first week or two, we have made it through the entire school year with flying colors!
I want to thank our wonderful teachers, who went above and beyond all expectations, first pivoting overnight from in person to distance learning last March and then simultaneously teaching in two modalities this entire school year. I also want to thank our entire staff for doing all the extra things that needed to be done and making all the adjustments that needed to be made behind the scenes to make this school year go smoothly. Our students also deserve a round of applause for their resilience and adaptability this year. They will certainly have some stories to tell their children one day about the school year that was like no other! Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all of you, our amazing parents, for your support, patience, kindness, and cooperation during this year with all of its unusual challenges.
Together, we educated 525 students and helped them grow in ways none of us would have imagined before the pandemic. We raised funds through #WeGiveCatholic, Celebration, restaurant fundraisers, and more, to help keep our school safe and healthy this year, and to improve the security and services provided at our building next year. We made the most of our school's 60th anniversary year, celebrating in small ways while we could not celebrate on a bigger scale. Most importantly, we continued to come together each week to celebrate our Catholic faith, which is the cornerstone of everything we do here.
I encourage you to continue to grow in faith and other ways as a family this summer. We have all been invited back to church, and I hope you will make your children's spiritual growth a priority during the time away from school. Another priority should be summer reading. Please encourage your children to pick up a book or two just for fun this summer, to keep their minds stimulated and growing. Equally important is letting your children have time just to be children. The past 15 months have been stressful for all of us, and children need time to play and relax this summer as we ease back to normal.
At this time, we await guidance on what the 2021-2022 school year will look like. We anticipate that some of the COVID protocols may still be in place, but as we all know, the situation continues to evolve rapidly. We are well into planning for next year around the factors we do know and can control, and will continue working throughout the summer to fill in the blanks as we have the necessary information to do so. We will, of course, be in contact with you later this summer as we know more and have updates to share with you.
With the most challenging school year on record officially in the books, I look forward to the 2021-2022 school year and all the positivity and renewed energy it will bring. In the meantime, I wish all of you and your families a safe, healthy and relaxing summer!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Woodman
Principal
Field Day is June 2!
- Students should dress down. Athletic wear and tennis shoes would be great choices for the day. It might also be a good idea to bring an extra change of clothes, just in case.
- Students need to bring a water bottle labeled with their name.
- Students need to bring a towel to sit on. We are hoping to eat lunch outside!
- If students are not planning to eat the provided hot dog lunch, they will need to bring a packed lunch.
- Students should have sunscreen applied at home before leaving for school in the morning! We are not able to apply sunscreen at school.
Wrapping Up Our 60th Anniversary Year
Last Call for Crystal Commemoratives!
The response has been awesome since Fr. Steve spoke about the last call opportunity to purchase Crystal Commemoratives and support the St. Hilary School Endowment Fund during Catholic Schools Week! From 45 crystals available at that time, currently only 20 crystals remain!
In keeping with our school theme, Answer God's Call... Change The World, don't miss your opportunity to change the world right here at St. Hilary! Crystals are going fast, and you will want to be a part of this campaign before it concludes at the end of the school's 60th anniversary year in 2021! Crystals that remain available for purchase are 14 - 6" x 6" crystals at $2,500 each and 6 - 12" x 6" crystals at $5,000 each. All of the 12" x 12" crystals at $10,000 each have been purchased!
Your choice of inscription can grace your lovely beveled glass panel, and you may make payments over a period of five years. Perhaps you would like to memorialize your family as one of the many that make up the school family, or you may wish to honor one of our staff members who have retired. Funds raised through the Crystal Commemorative campaign support the St. Hilary School Endowment Fund to ensure the vitality of St. Hilary School into the future.
Be a part of lasting St. Hilary history and contact Diane Sarkis, St. Hilary Parish Foundation Development Director at 330-608-4787 to reserve your crystal today! Once the crystals are gone you will no longer have the opportunity to have your special inscription etched for perpetuity in the windows at St. Hilary School. Don’t miss out!

TRAVEL QUARANTINE REQUIREMENT
As we have stated since August, we are requiring students to self-quarantine for 14 days after visiting states that have a 15% or more COVID-19 positivity rate.
As of March 10, Ohio no longer publishes the list or map of travel advisory states. The following links may be of help to you in determining whether your travel plans involve a state that has a 15% or more COVID-19 positivity rate:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/travel-during-covid19.html
https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#testing_positivity7day
Please also see the COVID-19 Travel Advisory FAQs below.
This is an extra precaution and we know this could impact travel plans. If your children are learning in-person, we are asking you to respect this decision and plan accordingly. Students who are required to quarantine after traveling to a state (or country) with a 15% or higher COVID-19 positivity rate will be required to distance learn for the 14 days.

HOT LUNCH ORDERING OPENS AUGUST 1
PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL AUGUST TO CREATE HOT LUNCH ACCOUNT
Hot Lunch ordering for August and September and milk ordering for the first semester will open August 1. All orders must be placed and paid for online by August 10. For those who like to plan ahead, all lunch ordering periods will run from the first through the tenth of every month for the following month, with reminders in the mass emails. First semester milk orders must be placed online between August 1-10 even if milk is the only item being purchased. Milk ordering for the second semester will be open in December.
Orders for lunches and/or milk are placed on the school website, www.st-hilaryschool.org. To place an order, you must have an active account. (If you ordered hot lunches for 2020-2021, you have an active account.)
If you currently have an active account and currently have a child in the school with additional sibling(s) coming next year, the additional sibling(s) will be automatically added to your existing account so that all children are on one account. You do not need to do anything.
To create an account, simply click the MySchool button at the top right corner of the home page and follow the prompts for account setup. Please allow 72 hours for account activation… therefore, please do not wait until August to create your account!

CYO SPORTS PICTURE COORDINATOR NEEDED
We are seeking a St. Hilary parent to coordinate the CYO Sports pictures that are taken for the St. Hilary yearbook. This person would work with Lifetouch, the Athletic Director, and the St. Hilary Facilities Scheduler to have pictures taken in the Fall, Winter and Spring seasons. It would be best if we could find someone now to shadow for the Spring season. If interested, please contact Marlinda Bonus at pab53170@aol.com.

INVITATION TO RETURN TO MASS
The Diocese of Cleveland has created a series of videos to welcome families back to Mass. You can view the first of these videos here.
FINAL SCHOOL MASS TO BE HELD OUTDOORS ON JUNE 3
Our all-school outdoor Mass on May 17 went so well, we would like to move our final school Mass outdoors, too! All grade levels will attend the Mass on June 3 at 9:30 am on Yahner Field. Students will need to bring a towel to sit on. Parents are invited to attend and should bring a towel or lawn chair. Because it will be outdoors, this Mass will not be live streamed. In the event of rain, the Mass will be held in the church. If moved indoors, limited grade levels will attend and only parents of students participating in the Mass will be able to attend.
SCHOOL YEAR THEME PRAYER AND SONG
Please click the images below for our prayer and song for this school year, exemplifying our school theme, "Answer God's Call...Change The World"! These will be handy as you join us virtually for school Masses.

CROSS COUNTRY PLANNING UNDERWAY - MEETING SET FOR AUGUST 15
Planning for the fall 2021 St. Hilary CYO Cross Country season is underway! There will be a Family Fun Run (or walk) to get together and talk about next season on August 15 from 3 to 4:30 pm at the Lodge at Allardale. Please click the flyer below for details. Contact Cross Country Commissioner Steve Mosher at 216-816-6590 or stevemosher15@msn.com with questions.
SUMMER SOLUTIONS BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR ORDERING
Summer Solutions books for 2021 are now available for ordering. Click the flyer below for details. Because the past year has been so difficult, we do not want students to feel pressured to complete work this summer. Therefore, no dress down passes or other incentives will be offered for students who complete the workbooks, summer reading, or other work. Our hope is that, for the most part, children will be children and take advantage of the time to get outdoors and play this summer. Families interested in the Summer Solutions books may complete them at their own option.
SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
Catholic Virtual offers academic and elective courses for middle school and high school students all summer long. Whether your child needs credit recovery, or needs to fill in skill gaps to be prepared for the fall, or is looking to explore an interest in a subject outside of their school curriculum, Catholic Virtual courses can meet your needs. Edmentum’s foundational skills program has been developed to specifically address learning loss in Math and Reading so students can get back on track for their upcoming grade level in 2021-2022. The new foundational skills program has been developed to address K-12 learning loss during the summer and even into next school year.
In addition to this program, Edmentum offers full time direct teacher led courses for students this summer. Courses for any students needing any kind of credit recovery with a certified teacher are available for $80 per month.

FINAL MASS JUNE 3 – DRESS-UP DAY (SENSIBLE CLOTHES & SHOES) FOR GRADES K-7
Students in Grades K-7 will participate in Field Day on June 2. Students may dress down for Field Day. Please see additional Field Day information above. RECYCLED UNIFORMS EXCHANGE DAY JUNE 3
Our Recycled Uniforms program will host its annual exchange day on June 3 from 7:30 am to Noon in the Spiritual Center Lower Level. You may turn in gently used uniforms at this time, or pick up items your child will need for next school year. You do not need to donate an item to receive one. Recycled Uniforms will also be available at Back-to-School Night in August, but for the greatest selection of items and sizes, you may want to stop by the event on June 3. Questions? Please contact Jen Warmus at jenwarmus@gmail.com or Ronda Powers at rondapowers916@gmail.com.
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL JUNE 3 - LUNCH AND DISMISSAL AS USUAL, NO PM LATCHKEY
It has come to our attention that there is some confusion surrounding our last day of school for the 2020-2021 school year. Our last day of school will be, and always has been, Thursday, June 3. This has been listed on our calendar since it was published last March. June 3 will be a full day of school, with students dismissed at the usual time, not dismissed early. All students need to have transportation arrangements at dismissal, as afternoon latchkey will not be available. Skyway is providing our hot lunch meal on this day, and those who did not order lunch will need to bring a lunch from home. To recap:
LAST DAY FOR STUDENTS
THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 2021
FULL SCHOOL DAY - REGULAR DISMISSAL
STUDENTS EAT LUNCH AT SCHOOL
NO AFTERNOON LATCHKEY
If you have received or heard any information other than this, it is incorrect. Please disregard it.
SIXTH GRADERS' VACCINE RECORD DUE TO CLINIC
Current sixth graders are required to have one dose of MCV4 vaccine and one does of Tdap vaccine before entering seventh grade. A record of administration of these vaccines must be provided to the school clinic as soon as possible this spring. Please see the letter below for complete details.
IMPORTANT UPDATES FROM THE CLINIC
By the end of this school year: If your child has medication, an Epi-pen, etc. stored or administered in the clinic, please be sure to stop by on or before the last day of school (June 3) to pick these items up. Any medication not claimed by dismissal on the last day will be discarded.
BEFORE the start of next school year: If your child will need medication, an Epi-pen, etc. stored or administered in the clinic NEXT YEAR, please be sure to complete the necessary paperwork BEFORE the start of the school year (i.e., schedule physician visits over the summer) and bring COMPLETED AND SIGNED FORMS to school on the first day. It is important that the clinic has these forms on file from the first day of school in order to legally store and administer medication. Please do not wait until school starts to complete these forms and have them signed by a physician. Forms can be found here. NEW PAPERWORK FOR MEDICATION, WHETHER PRESCRIPTION OR OVER-THE- COUNTER, IS REQUIRED EVERY SCHOOL YEAR… SO EVEN IF YOU FILLED OUT FORMS FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR, WE MUST HAVE NEW PAPERWORK FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.
PLEASE PAY LATCHKEY BALANCES ASAP
As the school year winds down, please make sure your Latchkey balances are paid ASAP. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
DON'T FORGET TO SEND WATER BOTTLES WITH STUDENTS EACH DAY!
As they have been all school year, our drinking fountains remain closed due to COVID-19. Students need to bring a water bottle (or more than one if need be) to school each day, especially as the weather begins to get warmer. We do have "emergency" water bottles for students in the rare event they forget one, but we do not have enough to provide water on a routine basis. Your cooperation is appreciated!
