Swanson North Fork Center Field Trip
4th Grade Swanson’s North Fork Environmental Center Overnighter
Dear Parents, March 3, 2017
We are excited to announce the “4th Grade Expedition” for March 29 & 30, 2017 (Wednesday and Thursday). We are returning to Weber School District’s Swanson’s North Fork Environmental Center for an overnighter. The center is setup with separate boys and girls bunk houses, a cafeteria, and a tremendous facility that provides a variety of activities while we are there--if the snow holds out we will be cross country skiing and snowshoeing. This overnight experience is a great stepping stone for the four-day Teton Science School experience these 4th graders will participate in next fall as 5th graders. We will have about a 7:1 student to adult ratio.
You can view details about the center here: http://blog.wsd.net/djenkins/
The Schedule
On Thursday, March 29, 4th graders should arrive at EBLS at the regular school time with their overnight bags (see packing list on the following page). We will stack students’ bags inside the front doors when students arrive in the morning for carpool. After lunch at EBLS, 4th graders will head for Swanson’s North Fork Environmental Center, arriving there about 2:00 PM.
After getting settled into the respective bunkhouses, we will snowshoe and/or cross country ski before dinner. After dinner students will participate in various activities in the lodge. We will wrap up the evening, listening to Mr. Newell spin some tall tales and share a video about the natural and human history of Utah’s rivers and look at the stars with our powerful telescope. We’ll have students in their bunks and lights out by 10:00 PM. Meals will be taken care of through school lunch accounts.
After breakfast on Thursday, March 30, students will spend the morning snowshoeing and cross country skiing. After lunch we will have a wrap-up activity to bring together the powerful lessons we will have experienced. We will leave the center by 1:30 PM and return to EBLS in time for carpool at 3:15 PM. Your students can tell you all about the experience in the comforts of your own home that evening (after they’ve cleaned up, of course!).
Summary
Based on our experience at the SNF Environmental Center last year, we are confident this will be a powerful and memorable experience that will lay the foundation for a successful experience for your student at Teton Science School this fall.
To offset the cost for overnight facility, please make a minimum $20.00 contribution to Ryker Dattage Outdoor Education Fund (checks payable to Edith Bowen Laboratory School).

Mr. Grossman Our New Student Teacher
I am originally from Logan, Utah. However, my wife and I have been to many states and traveled to Southeast Asia. We have explored ancient ruins in Cambodia. I am looking forward to getting to know your students and teach them some engaging lessons.
