A Familiar Face is Featured in "Faces of SPS"
Groves brings his enthusiastic, positive view of leadership to every day at Pleasant View K-8 School.
When he was a college student, Josh Groves wanted to be an engineer. He loved the engineering classes he took and the idea of working in the field as an engineer. But after completing an engineering internship, he stopped in his tracks.
“I hated it,” said Groves. “It wasn’t for me, but I was three years into college in engineering and I had no idea what to do. My parents encouraged me to take a couple of classes in a variety of fields, so I took Introduction to Education practicum. I did my practicum at Central High School and loved it.”
Groves completed his student teaching at Hillcrest High School and was hired on to be a math teacher before he graduated from Evangel. For seven years, he taught a variety of math classes at Hillcrest, while also serving as a coach for several sports.
A grant-funded, school within a school program through Burrell Behavioral Health at Hillcrest provided him an opportunity to serve in an administrative role. He helped to oversee the program serving Hillcrest’s at-risk students. When the program ended, he began working in the office with the coordinator of site interventions to monitor attendance and process tardies.
He was named assistant principal at Cherokee Middle School, working there for two years. He then served as assistant principal at Pershing K-8 School for three years before being named Pleasant View’s principal in 2016.
“I got to learn everything I can from all these great people I worked with along the way,” he says. “Bill Powers at Cherokee was so calm and patient with my growth and he let me find my way within his vision for the school. And Pam Holmes, her wealth of experience with elementary helped shape me for this job.”
Now, Groves is set on what he wants to do: support and shine a light on the students and staff he serves at Pleasant View.
“There are amazing kids and families here,” he says. “This is an amazing community and I feel like it’s a secret. So my mission is to share with the rest of Springfield how dedicated this staff is to serving kids and how great our hard-working community is in supporting our teachers and students. It’s a blessing to be in this chair, and I plan to retire in this seat.”
Groves received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education with an emphasis in math education from Evangel University. He went on to earn his master’s degree in K-12 administration from Southwest Baptist University. He currently is pursuing his doctor of education from Southwest Baptist University and hopes to graduate by the end of 2017. He is married to Brittany Groves, a counselor at Hickory Hills and Pershing. Together, they have a son, Parker, 2.
