February is Black History Month
Every month and every day should be a celebration of all cultures, colors, and events of historical significance. Keep this in mind in your classrooms as you plan. But February is nationally recognized to celebrate Black historical and current men and women who have made an impact on our country and the world. February as Black History Month has its original roots from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). This group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, and February become the month chosen by many cities and states to celebrate Black History, resulting in a national designation for the month in 1976 (www.history.com, the link is below).
For Chancellor, there will be daily Black History Month questions posed on announcements by Student Council, and there will be a Black History program on February 24th (schedule to come). There are many resources available online, in the lit lab, library, and in textbook resources, so incorporate what is age-appropriate for your students. A few great online resources are linked below as well. :)
