World of Stories
How using StoryWorld can enhance writing.
John Gardner, in his book The Art of Fiction, wrote, "... whatever the genre may be, fiction does its work by creating a dream in the reader's mind." In other words, the writer’s task is to keep the reader under his or her spell. Descriptive imagery helps the reader visualize the context for the story, whether it be a poem, novel, short story or a play. StoryWorld @ The Word captures the creativity by immersing the audience in a world of their imagination. By using the room to write in, children will be inspired and demonstrate how imagery can enhance their creative writing.
This course leads on from the resources developed by South Tyneside Literacy Advisors of the Creative Text Literacy training and Teaching Sequences. You will have the chance to
experience Storyworld @ The Word and consider how the resource could be used to accelerate attainment in writing.
This course is aimed at KS1 and KS2 teachers and Literacy subject leaders.

Boys Writing
Practical ideas for encouraging boys to write.
Reading and writing go hand-in-hand and it is through writing that children learn to formulate thoughts and improve their creativity and thinking skills. New research published by the National Literacy Trust reveals that boys are half as likely to enjoy writing as girls and almost a third never or rarely write outside of class.
Broadcaster and children’s author Simon Mayo says:
“It’s so important for boys to find a topic that interests them before they pick up a pen and start writing. I wasn’t particularly interested in writing at school, I only started to enjoy it later on, but I was hampered by being fantastically slow. If you can grab a child’s imagination in the same way, getting them to write about a hobby or something they really enjoy doing then the whole story writing world is open to them.” In this course, teachers will be able to explore a range of hardware, software and peripherals and consider how they could be used in class to accelerate attainment in writing.
This course is aimed at KS1 and KS2 teachers and Literacy subject leaders.
