Attendance Counts!
I hope you and your family have a wonderful, safe and fun February break. After this winter break, we will be settling in for the third quarter. And sad to say, we will probably have a few weeks of winter weather. At this time of year, winter begins to take a toll on school attendance. The slushy, windy weather can keep students at home. So can the colds, fevers, and earaches that often come with the winter. These absences, even if they are excused, can add up. And I know many of you are taking advantage of the Friday dismissal time to schedule off-island medical and dental appointments. Thank you for supporting your children and the school in this way. It really counts!
Usually chronic absenteeism is defined at being absence 10% or more days per school year. 10% equates to 18 school days. Obviously, because Block Island presents certain challenges in regards to being off-island, I don’t believe 18 days a year is applicable. However, as a community that certainly supports our students, we need to be paying attention to student attendance.
Please make every effort to get your children to school every day on time. We want your children to succeed. Above all, let us know how we can help.
Drop in!
Speaking on how we can help, I want to make sure you know that when I’m on the island, please feel free to drop in and visit with me. You can email me at jlundsten@bi.k12.ri.us to make sure I’m on the island. My schedule varies by day as I can only work 90 school days a year. Last week some parents dropped in to discuss some of their hopes for the school and their concerns. I appreciate the feedback and the conversation. My husband and I are headed to warmer climates for the vacation break but I will be checking my email. I will be on Block Island on February 29 and March 1st.
I look forward to seeing your children, the families, and staff on February 29th. Take care and have a safe and fun filled winter break.
