1st Grade Newsletter
January 11 - 15, 2016
A new year with new possibilities!
Curriculum for the week of January 11th - 15th
Math--Measuring Length: Students will estimate, measure and compare length using non-standards units. This week we will focus on measuring the same length using different size feet (baby feet, kid feet, basketball player feet)
Science--characteristics of the four seasons
We will be learning about the four seasons in science. We will focus on the colors you see, the changing landscape and changing temperature, and the types of clothing worn for each. We will be “Wearing the Seasons.” PLEASE do not go out and buy anything special for this, it’s just something fun we are doing to help students remember the changing colors we see as the seasons change. Below is the season for each day, and a list of suggested colors…
Tuesday—Fall—wear orange, yellow, brown
Thursday—Spring—wear green, yellow, red, blue
Friday—Summer—wear yellow, green
If your child wants to get creative and wear a scarf on Wednesday for winter and sunglasses on Friday for Summer, that’s fine! The more that they create their “seasonal outfits,” they more likely they are to remember it. Thanks for your support at home!
Reading--author study, Jan Brett
Our focus will be making text to text connections, cause and effect, and making predictions.
Visit her website to learn more about this author.
No spelling homework or spelling test this week.
We will review previously learned spelling patterns in class.
