A message from the principal
Dayton Families,
During the first trimester of school, our students focused on achieving rigorous academic goals, strengthening their social emotional skills and building their classroom communities. To celebrate all we’ve accomplished in this first trimester, we have a special day planned for Thursday, December 1. The theme: Your Future’s So Bright!
We are encouraging our students to wear bright colors on this day OR their new Dayton t-shirts (Thank you, PTO and local sponsors for helping make this happen). We are proud of our Eagles and look forward to helping them accomplish great things in our second trimester of school!
During the month of December, our school-wide focus is empathy. Character Strong defines empathy as “understanding and connecting with other people’s feelings.” We encourage you to check in with your child about empathy. Look for, and discuss ways it impacts our world and our relationships. Want even more information about empathy? Check out these additional resources to support your conversations at home:

December Specialists Highlights
Art - Project highlight: First grade self portraits. Ms. Merrill and Mrs. Christenson both tried a few different approaches to this project. Drawing yourself is a great way to practice drawing people, just look in the mirror! Ask your student which part was the hardest to draw, and remind them they are beautiful inside and out, just as they are!
Core- Greetings from Core technology! Kindergarten and first grade are finishing up their lessons about learning and using SeeSaw tools to create projects in Seesaw. Second graders are very busy learning the keys on their computers and keeping their eyes on the screen as they use a typing program to practice. Third grade is finishing up their animal research where they had to use E-resources to find and download pictures and then use screen capture to gather more information. Students then used a template to create a short paper about their animal using google Docs. Fourth grade too used e-resources to find information and create a google presentation. They also used google draw to create a poster all about them. Fifth grade is working to learn how to use google sheets to repeat patterns, enter data, and create graphs.
Their tech skills always impress me!
Explorations - We have been learning so much last month! Here is what each grade is learning about right now. Kindergarten - Economics (Needs & Wants). First Grade - Geography (Maps). Second Grade - Economics (Cost & Benefits). Third Grade - Sound & Light. Fourth Grade - Geography (Themes & Maps). Fifth Grade - European Explorers.
Feel free to contact us with any questions. Ms. Peterson & Mrs. Christenson
Media - In Media this month, students in grades K-5 will get to explore Makerspace Stations! This an opportunity for students to explore, discover new ideas, create, and build. A makerspace is a space where students can use creative thinking skills to solve problems or challenges, work collaboratively with others, a space to practice growth mindset and try new things. Our students love makerspace stations! Look for a sign-up genius coming soon, for ways that you can help donate to our makerspace station supplies.
Music - One of the instruments students in all grade levels learn to play in music is the xylophone. We have 16 of these beautiful orchestral quality instruments in our classroom.
PhyEd - In PE we have started tumbling and will move into gymnastics this month. This includes strength, balance, flexibility, etc. There will be stations to explore the rings, beam, tumbling, rope climbing, etc.

HOLIDAY SHOPPE & DESSERT NIGHT
The Dayton PTO is looking for volunteers for our annual holiday shoppe on Friday, December 2nd to serve dessert, ring up purchases, and wrap gifts. We need your help! Sign up via the link below or contact Heidi Stumpf for more information.
CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER
Second grade is looking for classroom volunteers to help with reading and math groups between 11:30-12:15 (math) and 1:00-2:00 (reading) daily.
There are many students at different levels with these skills who would like to have some small group or one on one skills practice to help build their skills. If you are interested, all materials will be prepared for you. Math small groups will include leading a group in a game or activity or working with an individual on specific practice skills. Reading small groups will likely include practicing words and sentences with individuals. You may also be listening to students read a book and guiding discussion. We would love to have parents that could come regularly to help with these tasks. However, if you can’t commit to a regular schedule, but know you have a day off and want to come help, please let me know and I would love to have you.
CHALLENGE READING/MATH PLUS
If you are interested in Challenge Reading or Math Plus, please reach out via email to Heidi.stumpf@ahschools.us with your name, primary email address, and schedule of availability. You will receive follow-up training information from the district to get started. We hope to kick off small groups in January.

Suggested shopping times:
4:00-5:30 p.m. (LAST NAMES L-Z)
6:00-7:30 p.m. (LAST NAMES A-K)
The gym, cafeteria, and hallways will be transformed into a shopping experience designed just for kids. Each child will have a high school volunteer guiding them to pick out gifts for each person on their list and to stay within budget.
To help with congestion, suggested arrival times are listed above, based on last name. If the time listed for your last name does not work for your family, you are welcome to come anytime.
Visits with Santa and other characters will be available between 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Parents/guardians are responsible for students while waiting in line. After a student is paired with their high school holiday shopper, parents or guardians will move to the cafeteria to relax, where desserts will be available for purchase. Once a student has finished shopping, they will be escorted by their high school holiday shopper to the cafeteria to meet their parent/guardian.
